After Fritz died, Gilbert became very cold and distant towards everybody. He wasn't the loud and obnoxious guy that everyone was used to. He was utterly crushed by Fritz's death and was quite literally heart broken. He was afraid of ever getting close to anybody for fear of the same thing happening again. Ludwig changed that completely.
