Chapter Three
“AHHH!” A scream came from outside. Snap! Crack! I knew what it was, the bear trap. I rushed out of my bed and looked out the window. There in the dark lay the man snuck in the bear trap! I woke up James as fast as I could.
“James! Oh James! Wake up quick!” I yelled tugging him. He was confused, but came with me anyways. I pointed from out of my window at the man. James grabbed a sword from a nearby closet and a candle then rushed down stairs. James shone the candle light near the bear trap and saw the man stuck with his foot in the bear trap. It had seemed that the man had gone to go steal more eggs, but since it was too dark to see he tripped and fell into the bear trap. He was shocked to see us and tried to hobble away, but his leg was caught. James pointed the sword at his throat.
“Any last words, thief?” he said. The man pulled out a dabber from his shoe and warned James to leave him alone. Shocked I knew he wasn’t going to give up with out a fight. He stood up with one leg still stuck in the trap, then grabbed a sword from his sheath and took a swing at James. He dodged and tried to take a stab at his leg, but was blocked. I ran into the house to get David. I only knew James was not a good fighter. David was one of the best sword fighters I have known next to my father. He wasted no time once I told him there was a thief outside. Taking a sword from the wall, he ran out. By the time we came outside, James was on the ground about to be hurt. David knocked the man down with a swing. The man’s foot was out of the trap, but it was bleeding horribly. His face was bloody as they fought and his foot was just hanging on to his leg. The man took a charge to his side, but was hit against David’s sword blocking every pass. David hit once making the man’s sword duller and duller. I covered my eyes whenever the man took a hit at David. James was up at this time watching at the two swords clashed together. Suddenly the man’s sword broke off entirely! Then David pointed the sword at his throat.
“Who do you think you are kid? I’m no thief!” the man yelled.
“Well then why were you fighting with me, hu! You really think I am going to believe you?” David said.
“Are you going to kill me or what boy? You know what I think? I think you can’t kill me! You are too good! And you can’t even kill someone bad because you’re too good!” the man yelled. David pointed the sword harder to his throat making him bleed.
“Don’t Ever tell me I ca-“ Then the man kicked David making the sword fly out of his hand. The man whistled loud and hobbled over to a horse running its way. He got on and yelled,
“Haha! You will see! I will get you back for this trap! You all will pay!!” Then he rode off. David was still lying down from the man kicking him in the groin. It had seemed we had lost him. I was shaken up from his words that I could hardly walk to our room. I fell asleep wondering at any time he could come back for us.
“Jesssssica! Wake up. Time to go to school!” Robin yelled practically in my face. Ugh, I was so tired wondering what had happened last night. At first I thought I had had a dream about the man getting caught in a bear trap, but once I saw the sprung bear trap surrounded by blood that morning, I knew it was real.
That morning’s walk to school was the strangest, quietest yet. David had some scratches on his face, along with a giant cut on his leg. James was extremely quiet as well as David. I knew what they knew and that was it. Robin still talk like nothing unusual had happened. Goodness, I didn’t know when she would stop. Finally she asked,
“Jessica, why the long face?”
“Oh, just tired. That’s all.” But the truth was, it wasn’t all. I was beginning to think we were all in serious danger!
