Chapter Five
It has been four days since I last talked to the Rebels and no one has actually seen them since. Not many people actually give a damn about them, but no one has seen them. I had feared possibly they'd gone over the wall, but I doubt they have. Half of them don't seem like they have what it could take.
On a different matter, my father's condition is getting worse each day. He's estimated to only have a week left, at the most. I must admit, it's not the nicest of sights seeing him gradually wither away, but my mother keeps forcing me to spend time with the old git.
Tiger has hardly talked to me and I've never felt this alone. He's just ignoring me and not visiting me, but I do think he's busy at work as well. I sit by the wall every single day, leaning my head against the base of the cliff face.
The wind blows steadily and sort of slowly as it sends long strands of my ginger hair across my face. I've always hated my hair, especially the colour. It's sort of a dirty ginger brown - Quite unusual really.
I find myself getting bored quickly, so I stand up and walk along the wall. The wall perimeters the fence, and the fence perimeters all the separate villages. I could probably get into the other villages by digging a hole or something, but surely they'd try to kill me. But I would give it a try, maybe, to see if they know any information that we don't.
I rub my tired eyes, thinking that I'm imagining seeing a black blur ahead of me. I rub them again and blink fast. But no, it's there. Oh shit... I'm not sure what it is and I'm not sure quite how to describe it, but it's big, lets start with that.
Among thin dark shrubbery, it is there and it looks as if it is several metres high as well as vastly wide. It comes into focus more when I move a couple of feet closer and I see that it looks almost like these creatures which used to taunt the village but they were all killed off many years ago. I think they were called bars, or bears, or beats or something like that. This one looks quite different to the sketches I've seen of them though.
Several rows of teeth which look like silver swords the size of index fingers, glazed over black eyes, fur thicker and blacker than night, paws round and claws curled. This beast could kill me, right here, right now. But I notice it's focused more on something else. Just ahead of it is a silhouette of a person, whom I can't quite make out yet.
I duck under a bush when the beast jerks his head my way, and I peek my head just out of the bush to try and look again. I see the beast trying to swipe the figure's neck, but that stumble back every time. The person, who I can now see is a boy, is trying to prod it away with a spear, but they're failing miserably. It's just making the beast angrier.
The beast makes a final swing at the kid's shoulder, and it gets him. He's pushed down roughly onto the floor and my heart beat quickens. Not thinking straight, I jump out from behind the bush. I pause for a second, taking a better look at the scene before I start jogging forward to meet it. The beast has spotted me and gives me a growl, but I just scoff mentally and hiss back at him. This animal thinks he's so tough - he ain't.
I push the poor kid back harshly and I take his spear. I weigh it up in my hands; it's a nice, good quality spear, I wonder where he got it from. I flick my hair back before I give another growl to the beast and I jam the pointy metal into his chest, right beside his heart. It yelps in pain, giving his surrender, but I'm not done yet. I draw the bloody stake out and I thrust it hard into his heart this time.
The beast cried out a mighty roar like sound and it causes me to stumble back a bit. Within seconds, the beast's lifeless body has fallen to the ground and I sigh in relief before turning back to the kid. He's staring at me with wide eyes and an open mouth. I crouch down to him and chuckle bitterly. "Don't carry a weapon if you can't fucking use it,"
