Steve's P.O.V

I was awoken rudely on Monday morning by the sound of my phone, the ringtone playing was the one that belonged to my girlfriend who was overseas in Afghanistan saving the little boy of the family who saved her during her time as a lieutenant in the navy, I had been with her but she told me to come back to Hawaii as I had work to do.

I lent over to the bedside table to grab my phone and answered it.  The conversation that followed lead to the biggest change in my life so far apart from my dads death and my mums re-appearance then subsequently her disappearance.

"Hello"
"Steve it's Catherine"
"Catherine when are you coming home?"
"That's the thing Steve I'm not coming home for a while. I was ringing to tell you your free to move on and find someone else you don't need to wait for me anymore"

As I listened I could tell she was crying and was obviously heartbroken but I was to angry to care.

"But Catherine I have waited and now you tell me to move on I can't believe you, in fact I knew this was coming as soon as you said you were staying in Afghanistan I knew it!" I shouted down the phone.

The only reply was "I'm sorry Steve, I do love you" and then the line went dead.

I couldn't believe her I threw the phone against the wall of my bedroom smashing it into a hundred tiny pieces that were not remotely fixable and only then realising that I had silent tears rolling down my cheeks and my vision was slowly blurring. I wiped my eyes and looked at the alarm realising I had to get ready for work. So I wiped my eyes once again and hopped in the shower,  dressed in my usually cargo pants, boots and a tight fitted t-shirt. Ate a quick breakfast of pancakes and coffee, grabbed my spare phone  then jumped in my truck and rode to the palace also known as Five O headquarters.

On the way I got stuck in traffic on the main road down Waikiki beach, I sat there thinking of all the times I was with Catherine and we were both home at the same time. The more I thought the more I realised that the time we spent together always felt wrong to me like something or someone was missing. Almost like she wasn't the right girl for me.

I arrived at the palace and walked straight past everyone and went to my office to do the huge pile of paperwork from the case we just finished...

Danny's P.O.V

There's something wrong with Steve he always says good morning, asks us all how we are and what we have been doing the night before. All though he's a SEAL and rarely shows emotion he does always seem happy and smiles but today something was off. So I decided to ask him...

I walked to Steve's office and knocked but before waiting for an answer I walked in and sat on the plush lever chair that sat opposite to him.

As I sat down he didn't even look up from his paperwork or acknowledge me. I waited for two minutes and just as I was about to say something he spoke " what can I do for you Danny"
"well theirs obviously something wrong with you and I wanted to now what's up?"
"You disturbed me to ask what's up?" He snapped back and that's really not like him
"Yh there's something wrong with you" I replied "your not yourself this morning so what's up?"

Steve's P.O.V

Knowing Danny the way that I do I knew that he wouldn't give up until he had an answer so I decided to save time and energy that would be wasted on an argument and tell him the truth.

"I got a call from Catherine this morning..." I started but before I could finish Danny decided to pry

"And...."

"She told me she's not coming back and that I'm free to move on. So as an answer to your question 'what's up' what's up is the fact that I just broke up with my girlfriend and I don't feel  upset or heartbroken it actually feels like it was a good thing" I replied solemnly

Danny's reply for once wasn't sarcastic or witty but actually made sense "well Steve maybe not feeling upset or heartbroken is telling you she wasn't the one for you." Almost satisfied with my answer and his he proceeded to push his chair out and walk out of my office.

The rest of the day I just stayed in my office finishing up my paperwork, at five I knocked off went home and watched the tv while drinking beer and eating pizza. At some point I fell asleep listening to the sounds of the tv and the waves lapping at my own personal beach at the end of the garden, it was just so peaceful.
