After Jay died, Katie spent a few days with Tim while he figured out what to do next. She kept to herself and wanted to be away from anyone that would remind her of what happened, usually huddled in the corner with her laptop and listening to songs that Jay liked to hear her sing. She found one that always made him cry when he listened to it; If I Die Young by The Band Perry. Headphones in, music all the way up, sleep-deprived eyes glued to the screen, Katie started to sing it. She cried through the song but managed to keep her voice even and soft. The young Kartell got so into it that her voice soon rose from its calm point to rich and full of emotion. By the time the song was over, Katie looked up to see Tim holding the camera with tears running down his face. Tim told her to never stop singing. Ever. She promised.
