In search of a Jedi

A/N Hey everyone! This is my first published fanfiction even though i wrote it before the last jedi trailer came out. It is a oneshot of how i thought Rey would react to finding Luke and their first interactions. i apologize in advance for any grammar and punctuation errors.

"we're  almost there." Rey turned her head to the side to see Chewbacca. He nodded in acknowledgment and left the cockpit to check the rest of their equipment.

 Rey took a deep breath to steady herself. They were almost there and she still didn't know what she was going to say to Luke Skywalker when she found him. "we were looking for you" ugh no that just sounded creepy. "Leia sent me to find you" still creepy but not as bad as before. "Hey i've heard a lot about you. i'm a super big fan" meh it's not that good. she continued to think but discarded every idea as stupid or creepy. 

Maybe he'll be the first one to speak she hoped. Pushing her nerves to the back of her mind, she started checking their list of supplies in her mind.

The holos of Ach-to were woefully incomplete. All she'd managed to find out about the planet was that it was almost completely covered with water and that it had many small islands covered in rocks and small trees

A blinking light came on indicating approach to final destination. As they dropped out of hyperspace Rey could see water forever.

"wow" "rwooooor" Chewbacca agreed. they saw a group of islands and Rey felt a push towards the largest one.

Rey grabbed her bag doing one last check to make sure everything was there. She exited the Falcon with chewy just behind her. As they emerged they could both feel the stillness pressing towards them.

Leia had told Rey that Luke had been searching for the first jedi temple. She reached out with the force but it was as if there was a wall keeping her from seeing anything, as if she was too short to see over Ungar Platts counter. The only thing she felt was an overwhelming sense of someone or something watching her.

"I think you should stay here with the ship" Rey said softly. Chewbacca protested but eventually yielded. As he turned to go inside they heard a small fluttering noise.

They turned around slowly. A small brown and white bird-like creature stood perched on a rock. Apprehensively it hopped closer to Chewy. In his turn Chewy started backing away. Rey, sensing his discomfort, slowly approached the small creature with an open hand.

It let out what could only be described as a squawking grunt and it tilted its head to one side. Rey giggled at its comically large eyes. "hello little guy. i'm not going to hurt you". She continued to coax it until it hopped into her hands.

"See Chewbacca? It won't hurt us" No longer had she said that than it nipped her finger with its little teeth. "Ow!" Chewbacca growled at the small thing. "I wonder if there are others" Chewbacca shrugged in response, still wary of the creature. He made a silly excuse abou leaving something in the falcon and he left Rey standing on the green- grey island alone with the alien

"are there more of you" It responded by lowering its head. "did you just...nod at me!?" It repeated the gesture. "so there are more of you" it nodded  "where? Will you show me?" It nodded once and took off flying. It landed in between two rocks and squawked. A larger creature poked its head. When it saw Rey it perked up and flew to her feet.

Suddenly, the bird...things came from almost every crevice and cranny, they covered everything. Rey realized that what she'd originally thought were stones were actually nesting birds.

All the tension and the being watched feeling she'd felt since getting out of the falcon drained away, replaced with wonder. Jakku was nothing like the rest of the galaxy. Here was life, Jakku only had survival.

With the tension gone, it freed her mind and she remembered the urgency of her task. "Is there another person on this island?" They stared soul-searchingly deep into her eyes not quite understanding. She gestured to herself and then to the island.

Sudden realization flooded their eyes. squawking erupted everywhere. Rey struggled to find meaning from them but she couldn't understand their communication at all. Eventually the first creature came over to her and gestured with its wing. It almost seemed like it was trying to say "Follow me". It quickly flew off and Rey struggled to keep up, clambering over the stone path. She finally crested a very large hill to see a hooded figure.

 The man turned around slowly and removed his hood. The man appeared very old,tired, and even a little annoyed. Something deep inside her pushed her to move forward. As she approached, the creature opened her bag. Inside was the lightsaber Maz had given her and Rey knew to take it out. She held it out but the man didn't take it.

The thing screeched and Luke, for it WAS Luke, squawked back. "I see you have befriended the porgs. "Yes" she replied "They led me to you". "That is not the only thing that led you. i can sense great power in you." The porglet flew off back to his home.  "You need a teacher" he continued. "I came to learn from jedi master Luke Skywalker". "Then I fear you will be disappointed. There are no jedi masters here". "But aren't you Luke Skywalker?" Rey asked, confused.

"Even if I was a master I wouldn't be able to help you". "But the galaxy needs you! I need you. you said it yourself". "It's my fault the galaxy is in this mess in the first place". "That's why you have to help me! I've heard the stories. I know what you are capable of. If you teach me we could save the galaxy together!"

"Well then, come with me and we'll see what we can do. But no promises" He turned and walked towards a cave that Rey hadn't even noticed it was so inconspicuous. "Thank you" Rey hurried after Luke into the cave's darkness.
