[THE HELP]
•
Icy water shattered against her body, bathing her in cold. Her eyes fired open. Her body stood on end and she was fuming.
She stared at her brother, across the metal table. She sat in a metal chair, her ankles anchored to the ground and her wrists tethered to a bar parallel to the table.
Louis sat with his ankles crossed on the metal table.
"Thank you," he said to one of the leader's fools, who had previously dumped the water on her.
The fool left.
"Louis, you better have the best explanation for hitting me like that and tying me up like this."
"Sister, I think you are confused about something."
"Enlighten me, then."
"When we were young, Mom married Dad. They chose each other. They promised each other, and what'd she do? Get knocked up by some asshole who paid her. You came about. You drove a wedge in their marriage, Mars. So they had Nina, trying desperately to glue together their broken marriage with another one of us. Mom ran away with us to this shit-hole, America. God Bless It, right? She was a coward."
"He was an asshole to her, and don't you dare talk about her like that," she hissed.
"She was a coward!" he yelled, taking his legs off the table. "She still is," he evened. He placed his forearms on the table and laced his fingers together. "Now I have the chance to fix it. Fix their marriage. Fix our family. Mars, you're a mistake, but mistakes can be fixed."
"Fixed, Louis? How are you going to fix me? I'm not broken." A door behind her opened.
"Dad," Louis greeted. His father entered the scene and Louis stood and hugged him.
It was the man Danielle had talked to, the owner and leader of this little sandwich shop mob.
She glowered.
He took Louis's seat and Louis went to Mari's shoulder, and patted it. She flinched away from him.
"Don't touch me."
"Dear, little sister, don't talk to me that way."
Louis left, closing the door.
"So, Mari, how are you these days? I haven't seen you in... eleven years? Twelve? Beside the point. My daughter, smile. Aren't you happy to see your father?"
"You're not him. You may be Louis's dad, but you were never mine. Not the way you handled Mama."
"Tsk, tsk. You should be more like Louis. He's more than happy to apologize for what your mother did, and for hurting my business. You, you were always a dumb girl."
He glanced at his watch.
Her stomach twisted. "What time is it?"
