~ Sometimes you can be too busy searching in the distance, to notice that what you are looking for is right next to you.~
Matthew"Your turn to play, Matt," says Shaylon. Playing cards are my and my buddies' usual entertainment in Astronomy class since Ms.Wheeler decided that used it for nap time. Not that I care though. Besides, I know all the work, anyway.
After I made my move, I look up from my cards and notice Chloe sitting in the right-hand corner bench engrossed in a novel. That damn girl always has a smile plastered on her face. Doesn't she ever get tired of smiling so much?
"Thompson," I call out and nod. She frowns and look around to find the person who interrupted her 'reading time'. She locks eyes with me and smiles. You know that smile which radiates warmth and usually melts your heart? Yeah, that one.
I suddenly regret calling her. I nod politely and casually look away so that she doesn't see my uneasiness."Dude, what's up with you man? You've been acting weird this whole week," says Gabriel, interrupting my thoughts. He's right, I have been acting weird all week and he would know. He's been my best friend since kindergarten.
There's only one source which led me to my sudden weirdness and that is: Chloe Thompson.
Chloe
I sigh at the sudden change of Matthew's mood. What was I even thinking? I know he's not into me at all, so why bother?
Why did he even call me? For how long was he staring at me? Shouldn't I feel creeped out by that? Now I feel all giddy inside again. Ugh!
Seriously, Chloe? Get your act together! You're not even suppose to feel happy.
I ignore my subconscious and turn my gaze back to Matthew. He's laughing at something that one of the boys might have said and I find myself smiling at that. He looks so carefree when he does that. My eyes trail down to his biceps and I instantly melt at the sight of it. Never have I ever seen a guy carry such a muscled body effortlessly. Even though I enjoy staring at his body,I always end up looking at his face. He has piercing, blue sapphire eyes which I've noticed is always directed at me. He also has gorgeous, silky, jet black hair. I'm sure he doesn't need any products to style it, because it beautifully hangs alongside his ears, and his olive skin complements his hair. I just love it when he clenches his jaw. I find it extremely...hot?
"Aww! Ugly is seeking for attention by Matthew. How cute!" says Adele with a typical blonde voice. She looks at me with distaste.
I seriously don't feel like arguing with a girl who's brain is the size of a pea and who opens her legs for anyone and everyone. I shudder at the thought.
I return to reading my novel, City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. I love being able to escape reality and just for that moment, travel to a different dimension to be someone else..."My mother did this to me?" Clary demanded, but her surprised outrage didn't sound convincing, even to her own ears. Looking around, she saw pity in Jace's eyes,in Alec's-- even Alec had guessed and felt sorry for her.
"Why?"
Adele bangs her hand on my desk. "Hello, I'm speaking to you!"
"I don't know." Magnus spread his long white hands. "It's not my job to ask questions. I do what I get paid to do."
"Within the bounds of the Covenant," Jace reminded his voice soft as a cat's fur.
"I wouldn't mess with me if I were you, Ugly. You know, all of you Uglies think you're untouchable but you're not!" She snarls and scratch me across the cheek with her long, witch nails. I touch my cheek only to feel blood trickling down my face.
I look up and once again, lock eyes with Matthew. His eyes is filled with anger and a mixture of something I can't describe.
My eyes fills with unshed tears and I grab all my belongings and run out of the class that brings me nothing but anguish. I stop at a tree which almost looks like an umbrella. It's as if it's trying to say, "Don't worry, I'll protect you." I immediately decide that this is where I'll 'hang out' from now on.
You know you can't run away from everything. You have to face your confrontations...
Whatever. It doesn't matter if I do or if I don't, because everyone will always have a problem with me.
Maybe it's because you're the problem. Have you ever thought of that?
Of course not. But now that you mention it... Maybe...
"Hey." A shadow towers over me and when I look up I come face to face with the guy who sparked my interest, Matthew.
I nod my greeting, knowing if I speak now then tears will start to roll down my cheeks. I bite the inside of my cheeks to prevent it.
Matthew sits down next to me and I keep my eyes fixed on the beautiful view spread out infront of me.
"Look at me," he says softly. As stubborn as I am, I don't.He gently turns my face to him and I quickly close my eyes. I don't want him to see me like this. Not anyone for that matter.
"Open your eyes. Please." It only takes that last word to make me oblige. No one has ever used that word on me.
Matthew
It pains me to see her so hurt. Something in me just wants to protect her. What's happening to me?
Her eyes shines with unshed tears and I suddenly feel like beating Adele to a pulp, but I'm sure Chloe wouldn't like that.
How do you know what she wouldn't like?
Because it's obvious? What girl would like a guy who beats up girls?
You know what? Don't answer that."A-Adele," she stammers and simultaneously, her tears start streaming down her beautiful cheeks.
"Shh... I took care of the situation. She won't be troubling you anytime soon," I reassure her.
"How did you do that?"
Oh no, I just revealed to everyone what a slut she is by showing the nude pictures she sent me of herself, which, of course, I immediately rejected. I also explained to them that that could be the reason she targeted all the girls who could 'potentially' date me and named them Ugly.
Chloe's not even in the least ugly. In fact, she's beautiful.I shake my head at her perplexed gaze. It's best that she doesn't know about what I did or otherwise, she would just feel sorry for Adele. And I don't want that because Adele deserves every bad omen coming her way.
I pull her into my embrace and she instantly let's go of the sorrows that keeps her bind, and immediately I know: I need to save her, but from what, I don't know.
