~True friends try to cheer you up in your bad times.~

Matthew

She didn't show up.

I kept on hoping to see her the next day. But days went by, and those days turned into weeks. I asked our school's counsellor if she knew what was up with Chloe but she, herself, didn't know.

To say that I'm worried is an understatement. I even went to her house to find out why she's been absent all this time. She wasn't there, either. I also didn't see any sign of her parents being home as there was no vehicle in sight.

I step out of my new Lamborghini and walk towards the school entry. Just when I enter the school hall, I'm stopped by someone.

"Matthew..." Adele coos and puts her arms around my neck. It smells as if she bathed in more than one bottle of perfume. I, immediately, push her away from me and walk over to my locker. I take out the books I need for the first period.

"Matthew, baby... Jackson's throwing a party tonight for the whole of the tenth grade. We should go." Ugh, this girl is more of a pest than an actual fly. She just doesn't understand the prospect of no. Every time, she tries to worm her way into my life. Other guys would probably find this exciting; I find it to be a huge turn off.

"You know, Adele... If you go on living like this, by the time you get married, your body parts will probably be rotten. You wouldn't want that, do you?"

She gasps but quickly recovers. Knowing that she has nothing to say, she stomps off. It was crude but it had to be done.

Just when I thought of giving up hope, I see Chloe walking down the hallway. She's wearing a long sleeve crop top and jeans which starts at her mid waist. I must say it's a little warm to be wearing it, but it looks beautiful on her. She looks beautiful.

Everyone quiets down instantly, staring at her like she's some freak. I suddenly feel the need to protect her and I do exactly just that.

"What are you all staring at?" I give them my infamous death glare and they all scurry away like little rodents. It never gets old. I chuckle at their stupidity.

I'm so caught up in that little episode that I almost don't see Chloe walk past me. I can't go another day without talking to her. Her smile is like a drug and I'm the addict. I don't know... I just always seem to get the urge to make her smile. You know how a book gets to make her smile? Now, I want to be the reason to make her smile. I know it's weird but I just can't help but feel like that.

"Chloe, wait!" I call after her.

She stops but doesn't turn around. Probably waiting for me to catch up with her. And when I do, I pull her into my arms and give her tight hug. I sigh at the feel of her in my arms.

"I missed you," I tell her once I let go of her and we start walking again.

She smiles up at me. "I know."

"If you know, then you deliberately made me suffer like that. Waiting days and days for you to come to school," I feign being sad.

Her eyes go wide. "What? I... I didn't mean it in--"

I burst out in laughter. She quickly catches on and hits me lightly on my chest. "I thought that you were being serious!"

"Can't... I...Have... A... Little fun once in... A while?" I say between breaks of laughter.

She smiles sheepishly. "I guess you can but don't scare me like that again!" She says sternly.

"Yes, ma'am" I say seriously and even salute.

She nods at me as if she's the general and I'm one of the trainees, but then both of us breaks into laughter.

Chloe

Matthew hasn't asked me why I haven't been at school, yet. And I know it's bound to be asked but for now, I'd like to live in the moment. Even though I'm trying to figure out why he's being so nice to me, I still enjoy his company. It's better than all those days I've spent alone, holed up in my depressing thoughts. It really sucks to have no one.

You do have someone: Matthew.

Oh, so now you're on my side? Besides, after all the excitement has worn off, he'll find out that I'm worth nothing and then he'll leave.

Classes has been fine so far. No one has bothered me yet, so I hope and pray it stays like that. I don't have time to still worry about these kids' frivolous ways.

I forgot to bring my own lunch so I guess it'll have to be the cafeteria's. It beats having nothing, right? I take a deep breath before I enter the cafeteria. I haven't been in here for a long time. I think the last time I was in here was for orientation day.

I push the door open and walk in. Just as I suspected, everyone stops doing what they are doing and they just sit there, staring at me as if I'm a ghost. I think one boy even dropped his spoon on the floor out of shock.

Well, you don't see that everyday...

I make as if I don't notice their odd behavior and walk over to where the lady is serving food. I look at the not-so-attractive choices and opt for vanilla yogurt, an apple and mixed berry juice.

Just when I'm about to leave, Jadee calls out to me. "Come sit here," she mouths out to me, pointing to her table in the corner.

My first option is to decline but I feel guilty for neglecting her these past few weeks, so I walk over to her and take the seat which has my back faced to everyone. I don't want to attract more attention than I already did. Besides, most of them have gone back to what they were doing.

"Hey, Jay." I smile guiltily.

She gives me a sad smile. "Chlo, were have you been? I've been worried sick for these past few weeks."

"I just wanted to take a break from school. I've been really tired," I lie. Well, it is... partially true. Now, that's what you call creative truth telling. And to make that statement seem more genuine, I add a smile to it.

She scrutinizes my face. "Are you sure?"

No. "Yes, I'm sure."

She nods in acceptance and leaves it at that. "Well, Jackson's throwing a party tonight. Wanna come? "

"Jay, you know I don't attend parties. It's not my thing." I absolutely abhor parties. The music is always too loud, people are always drunk out of their minds and they always end up having intercourse with the first, most willing person they see. I shudder at the image.

She gives me a look that says, "I knew you were going to say that". "I know but going out and having fun will do you good."

"I don't know... My dad won't let me go, either." He'll probably throw another fit and start calling me worst names than slut.

"You don't have to tell him. Just tell him, you have to do a group assignment that's due on Monday. We'll even leave early, if that's what you want. I just want you to be happy and have a little fun. Is that so bad?" She arches an eyebrow in expectancy.

"Well, if you put in that way, then I guess I'll go."

"Yes!" She squeals and awkwardly bends over the table and gives me a hug. "I swear you won't regret it!"

Oh, I hope so.
