L was aware that many people wanted him killed, especially Kira. He devised a plan to fake his death, but only when absolutely necessary. In his heart he knew that, in order to win the war, Kira had to believe him dead. It would take many sacrifices to get it done, but when the time was right it would work.
In order to do this, he had to approach three people. The first was Watari to explain everything. The older man was thoughtful but agreed that it was worthwhile.
The next was Mogi-san. The reserved detective was called into L's quarters after everyone was asleep. "Yes Ryuukzaki, what is it?" he asked tentatively as he entered the room."
The onyx-haired sleuth gazed up at Mogi. "Mogi-san. I have information to share with you that mustn't be passed on to any other Task Force member. It is a matter of life and death."
Mogi nodded, attentive. He was intimidated by the smaller man. Not only was L unpredictably reckless, he saw the way he fought Light and didn't want to be on the receiving end of those blows. "What is it?"
L stood from the crouch he presumed in his chair and checked the room for any cameras and bugs. He was extremely thorough, checking every corner of the room, going through every book on his shelf, even crawling on the floor to check under the bed. Satisfied, he sat back in his trademark crouch on the chair.
"The reason I am telling you this is because I will need your full cooperation in helping me carry it out."
Mogi listened intently. He didn't know what the genius was planning, but it must have been extremely important if L could only trust him with it.
L paused, then stared at Mogi with his large dark eyes. "I need you to help me fake my death."
Mogi shook his head, not sure if he heard the detective clearly. "I'm sorry, but did you say—"
"I said it once, I will not say it again." L solemnly gazed at Mogi. "In order to take down Kira, he will need to be convinced that I'm dead. He will drop his guard eventually, comfortable with the idea that no one is capable of stopping him. When that happens, my successors will stop him." A small smile hinted on his alabaster face. "I like I said, justice will prevail."
As L explained the plan to him, Mogi realized how much of a genius L truly was to think through every detail. The plan was complex, risky, out-of-your-mind crazy... and it was flawless. It was going to work.
"What I need to do now," L stated once he was finished describing his scheme, "is to convince Rem to play along. Watari is the only other person aware of this plan, and I will give him the signal on the day to fake our deaths." The dark orbs of his eyes pierced right through Mogi like he was nothing but air. "Can I count on you to help us?"
Mogi nodded frantically. "Yes, Ryuukzaki."
"Good." L turned in his chair so that he faced the computer going on his desk. "You are not to speak of this encounter with anyone, Mogi-san."
"Of course not, Ryuukzaki." Nodding once more, Mogi turned on his heels and briskly walked out of the room.
