Okay, this is the last chapter for this fanfic. It has been a short ride, but hopefully one filled with newfound happiness for those who have seen or read the actual Death Note. Just remember, L is real, he is alive, and he shall live on forever!
P.S. Just a warning, in this chapter there is a small act that people might consider "yaoi", but I assure you that is not the intent. So please don't be turned off and stop from reading the end.

The screens went red, L was shouting directions as he felt his heart and breathing slow to a near stop. The spoon in his hand for his tea fell to the floor, followed by his own body. Light caught him before he hit the floor, yet the sneer on his lips confirmed one thing: he was expecting L's death. He was truly Kira.
The church bell was deafening as L stared into his opponent's eyes for possibly the last time. He was forcing his successors on this mastermind who believed he killed the genius L. If L didn't plan to fake his death, then it would have been his genuine last day alive.
Light knew how to play this game. L hoped to dear God that Near and Mello did as well.
A sudden peace washed over the former detective. Of course they could. Together they outsmarted L himself. Patience was the key, but they would let justice prevail. L could rest easy for once.
This is not the end, L thought as his heavy eyelids closed. You have not won yet, Light Yagami. We will meet again.

The rest of the plan was executed in near perfection. Every single Task Force member believed L to be dead, all except Mogi. He did his part in distracting the others as Watari and L escaped back to England. All they had left now was to wait.
Over the next three years Near and Mello worked over the case--seperately at first, much to L's dismay. They weren't getting anywhere finding out who Kira was. He want so desperately to tell them that Light Yagami was Kira. But he wasn't to go anywhere near the case after his "death". So he anxiously waited.
Finally, in that third year, Near and Mello started working together again. They found out that Teru Mikami, one of Light's worshipping fans, was in possession of a death note. They used that as stepping stones to the master mind, Light himself. Mello gave his life to find Kira, and L went to his funeral in disguise with Watari. Near lived on, but Light himself? Well...Matsuda got a little trigger-happy.
As Light was limping away from the Task Force, L followed him all the way to the abandoned warehouse where he laid down, gasping shallowly.
L finally stepped out of the shadows to greet his opponent for the first time in over three years. Light showed no shock at his sort-of revival, only glared at the former detective.
Despite himself, a small smile played on L's lips. "It is over, Light-kun. You have lost the battle. The world knows you are Kira. Justice has prevailed."
Light's glare dissolved into bitter tears. "I was making the world into a better place!" he sobbed. "What I did was right--"
"Shh," L lifted one hand to brush against Light's wet cheeks, silencing the younger man. "It's okay. You will know what is right, Light-kun. You will know." L knelt by Light's side and leaned forward until he had gently pressed his lips on the younger one's. It was not a sign of romance, but of peace. A final offering, a gesture of good sportsmanship after a game well-played. It was a symbol of farewell to a good friend.
Light's last breath escaped from his lips just as L pulled away. "Goodbye, Light Yagami," he whispered to the silence.
