*I dedicated this chapter to Lydia. You are the most special person ever in this world.*
Mason
I picked up my phone that had rang for quite a while.
"Ivan"
"Mr CEO. How are you man?"
"Nothing much. I'm just working on-"
"You and your work." Ivan replied in a flat tone.
I couldn't help but chuckle at Ivan's comment.
I sank into my swivel chair ready to listen to Ivan's lecture's of 'you-only-live-once-so-get-your-ass-off-work-and-live-a-little'. To be honest, I wish it was that easy but I had my life mapped out for me. The company needed me especially after it went into a standstill after my father passed away just a few weeks ago."I actually called to see if your fine after the news was plastered all over the internet." Ivan continued.
"After what internet?" I demanded, startled by what Ivan just said. I readjusted my posture and leaned forward.
"Wait...you haven't heard about the article going around?" Ivan asked with a worried tone.
"Not really."
"I really don't want to quote the article so just look it over The Express Times website. Call back after you read it."
Ivan hanged up the phone before I could inquire more about the article. I logged into the website through my phone. I was hesitant at first, not wanting to know what really was written on the article. My greatest fear at this point was that it could sabotage the company, the legacy of the Dalton family or even me.
After summoning up some courage, I scrolled through the home page.
Is Mason Dalton engaged to Paulina Florez?: Things you didn't know about Mason Dalton.
My gaze shifted from the phone screen to the ceiling. Maybe this is just a bad dream.
This is just a bad dream.
Deep inside, mixed feelings of disappointment and anger overwhelmed me.
Now the entire world knows about my wedding and fiancee. It is Paulina. Paulina couldn't keep her mouth shut. She just couldn't.
I hit the table with my clenched fist in a rage.
I rose from my chair and stormed out of the office. I marched forward to the secretary's office that was adjacent to my office. The door was opened and I could see her surrounded by her fellow colleagues, chattering away happily.
The fact that they were busy gossiping and not doing any work agrivata"Ms Morgan!" I growled at the secretary.
The chattering died and the office became dead silent.
"Why didn't anyone tell me about the article that is speculating all over the internet? Did you know about it! Tell me!" I demanded angrily
The silence in the room spoke magnitudes of their guiltiness.
"You knew about that stupid article and none of you never cared of sharing it with me. It's bad enough I came to the office, start rebuilding this company and then Boom! I get a phone call that I am supposedly trending over the f**cking internet."
Ms Morgan gulped nervously before trying to answer.
"I...I...We...didn't want to say...I mean we didn't tell you Sir because we were scared." Ms Morgan finally answered.
"Are you speaking for yourself or the others?"
Ms Morgan shifted her gaze over her colleagues, who surprisingly were staring at her too.
"Sir it's all of us who were sacred and we are terribly sorry for not telling you." She continued.
I bit my lower lip restraining myself from blubbering words that I would later regret.
"Next time, Don't you ever hid anything from me. Have I made myself clear" I said in a low yet frightening voice.
They all nodded in agreement.
Satisfied that I had addressed that issue, I left the office ready to met Paulina.**********
"Why can't you believe me! I didn't do it!""Then prove it Paulina.Prove you didn't do it!"
"I can't believe you of all people would accuse me ratting out about our marriage. You should actually believe me."
"Then who could it be Paulina. Tell me who in this freaking world would do it?"
"I don't know...a spy? You know what, it doesn't matter because after a while the scandal will end just like others do."
"A spy, really? You should really listen to yourself right now.My reputation is at stake here and you are seriously blame it on a spy! Bravo Paulina, bravo indeed" I growled a sarcastic reply.
"I wasn't blaming it on a spy, I was suggesting it might be a spy who did this!" Paulina shouted back.
I ran my hand through my hair in frustration. Paulina sat on the glass coffee table that was in front of me.
I had requested Paulina to come to my villa this evening to find out if she publized our engagement and wedding plans.
"Listen, I am sorry Mason. Please trust me that I didn't do it. We can just postpone the wedding to a different date and just not tell anybody."
"You think it's that easy." I replied.
"It's okay if you don't want to postponed it. We will do it your way this time." she continued.
"Paulina, I really don't want to talk about this mess up right know. I'm really stressed out and my mother can sort this wedding stuff cause we both know that-"
"Yeah I get it." Paulina replied in a low tone.
"I'm sorry I shouted at you back then. Could you please do me a favour and give me some time alone. Just call me when you get back home."
Paulina seemed to be taken a back by me telling her to leave the house. She simply grabbed her purse and shut the door behind me.
I took a gulped down the whiskey that I had served myself earlier and reflected over the tragedy that happened today.
