- Chapter Four -

I don't know how long I was tossing and turning, it felt like an eternity. At least I was able to sleep on the couch with Max, being pressed against his warm body felt comforting and I was surprised I hadn't fallen asleep earlier.

I rolled over again, careful not to wake Max, Thank god he's a heavy sleeper, I thought.

"You're so cute when you sleep." I thought aloud, even if he couldn't hear me.

I brushed a stray strand of hair away from his eyes and kept staring at his perfect features. He started to snore gently and I giggled as quietly as I could, rolled over, and shortly fell asleep.

"Time to wake up!" I felt my body being lifted, then a weightless feeling, then being thrown back on the couch. I groaned.

"It's too early for this." I managed to moan.

"Early?!" I heard Jinx yell from the kitchen. "It's 12:43! We've eaten lunch without you!"

"You looked tired so we let you sleep." Max said relaxingly.

I smiled warmly up at him and propped myself up on my elbows. I felt my head and discovered my hair was like a squirrels nest, I probably looked like I had a mini afro, all poofy and messed up.

"River, I'm bored." Jinx complained. "Can I play with your hair?"

I shurgged, "Sure." It needed to be brushed anyways.

She grinned brightly and ran off to the bathroom to grab some things. She returned shortly with a flat iron and a couple clips, relatively ten minutes later my brown hair (that was just past my shoulders) was flat ironed with my long bangs clipped out of my face.

"This is fun." Jinx giggled. "How about an outfit and make-up to match." She gave it her winning smile and winked.

"Sounds fun." I laughed at her girly enthusiasm.

A dig through her closet and a grilled cheese sandwich later she was beginning to apply gentle layers of mascara to my already long eyelashes and deep red lip stain.

"You look beautiful." Max breathed.

I stepped up to the giant mirror hanging on the wall, I admit, I did look beautiful, like I was about to go on a date.

I wore a white tanktop under a looser, slightly transparent top that looked nice with my dark brown hair, dark jeans that complimented my long legs, and my golden necklace I always wore.

Max kept gawking at me while Jinx kept looking at me smugly, proud of her work.

"I'll admit, you did good." I smiled, aware I looked very attractive.

"More than good!" Max burst out, "You look amazing!"

Jinx and I both laughed at him, "My turn!" I said still giggling and grabbing Jinx by her shirt collar and dragging her towards the closet.

I dug around for a while and finally found a long sleeve gray shirt with a low cut collar and a pair of black jogging pants. I paced in circles around her for a few minutes, deciding what to do with her very short velvet red hair. I ended up just giving her a hat.

We sat bored, not much to do when you can't go outside. I fiddled with the fake nails Jinx had given me, they felt weird and I didn't like them. I slowly began to pull them off.

"I don't like being cooped up inside!" Max exclaimed, frustrated, and reading my mind.

"Then lets go outside." I gave a mischievous smile.

Max raised his eyebrow, "Since when did you do dangerous things?"

The grin on my face didn't waver as I walked out the front door and sat in the front lawn, half expecting to see a car come racing down the street. But instead I saw a girl running down the street.

She looked slightly familiar to me, maybe I've seen her around school? I thought to myself. No, it wasn't-

I stood up and ran down the street as fast as my long legs could carry me- and not to brag, but that was quite fast. I reached the girl running in no time.

"You better...run." She gasped.

"Nope!" I yelled, grabbing her hand and darting behind the nearest house to avoid the three cars in her pursuit.

She look terrified as we hid behind the random house, but she still stood strong, where as I would've been cowering on the ground.

Her medium length black hair stuck to her face in places from sweat, her t-shirt that had a band I'd never heard of on it was wrinkled, and her black jean shorts ripped in one place.

"What happened?" I asked her, once she'd regained her breath.

"Well I was walking, and a car pulled up to me and a tall man jumped out and grabbed me. I fought to keep him off me and when I broke free from his strong grip, I ran." She shrugged like it was nothing.

She looked at me kindly, "I'm Victoria, I've seen you around school before."

"I'm River." I reached out to shake her hand, which was oddly soft.

We walked back to Jinx's house, looking back behind us to make sure no one was following us. I opened the door and let Victoria in first.

"Thank god you're back! I was beginning to worry-" Max stopped when he saw Victoria, "What are you doing here." He spat.

I'd never seen him that upset in a long time. His arms were crossed and he was leaning his weight mostly on one leg, even his body language said he was angry.

"I suppose you two know each other." I squeaked awkwardly.

"Yes, yes we do know each other." Victoria said bitterly, "And it's a shame we know each other."

For what felt like forever Max and Victoria had locked eyes, giving each other death stares. Jinx walked between them singing and acknowledging Victoria with a nod and a smile as she walked into her room and shut the door.

That snapped them out of their trance-like glaring contest. Max walked over to me and hugged me, pretending like nothing happened. While Victoria just stared down at her blank converse.

"Where's Jessie." Victoria muttered.

"Taken." I said flatly.

"Scarlett?"

"Taken too."

"The rest?" She said hopefully.

"Unknown, we haven't contacted them yet." I responded to every one of her questions.

"Oh, I suppose I should leave then." She said sadly, pushing the door open and walking out.

"Want me to come with you?" I asked, giving my tone fake happiness.

"Nah, I'm okay. I'm a tough girl, I got away from them before." She joked.

I smiled weakly and waved goodbye to her, once she'd gone I began the interrogation on Max.

"So," I began "What's up with you and Victoria?" I raised an eyebrow and put my hands on my hips.

"I knew you'd ask that." He sighed. "I really don't want to talk about it right now."

"Ok, I can respect that." I nodded.

"Thank you." He gave me a tight hug and a kiss on my forehead.

I smiled and blushed at his affectionate gesture, then (since he was much taller than me) I stood up on my toes and kissed his lips lightly.

I flipped my hair over my shoulder and smiled, walking off to the bedroom hoping to join Jinx in singing and listening to music.
