7:00pm,

Having to listen to her mom again, a contributing factor to all of this. “Whatever mom. Bye,” Lace hangs up the phone noticeably hard. Hard enough to get the front desk counselors to stop and stare at her.

“Lace, a movie is starting in the lounge. If you would like you are free to watch it or go in your room.”

Lace didn’t pay the counselor any mind. She started walking to her room. Until she walked by the lounge. It wasn’t the row of basically rubber chairs, or the many kids sitting in them that got her attention, but it was what was on the TV.

    Shrek. Memories.

Good Ones. Of a happier time for her.

She walked into the lounge and completed ignored the looks she was getting for being, “The New Kid” and she sat down in the front row, next to the bigger kid.

    “Hey,” she said immediately.

“We haven’t spoken yet, but I’m Gabe.” He put his hand out to shake her hand but quickly pulled it away remembering the “No Physical Contact” rule. It took her a while to fully realize over the movie playing that he spoke to her.

“Hmm? Oh, yeah. I’m Lace,” she said quite happy but quickly went back to watching Shrek.

    “You like Shrek?” Gabe asked.

Yet again a late response from Lace, but this time not so happily. “What? Oh, yeah… just something my brother and I used to watch.” She looked down at the floor then back down at the TV. Gabe understood that he was probably prodding too far into her life already.

“It gets better, you know. You just have to want to believe it,” he said before being silent for the rest of the movie.

If only she could believe that.
