To think for a moment that such a wicked, beautiful thing could ever be free.

Ruben had caught her before she had got to the main door. Caught her, because she had wanted him to. To see if he would stop her, what an interesting thing how such a vulgar man could want something to stay so bad.

He didn't yell for her, no, he ran for her. Ran quickly and when he caught her, he beat her.

She coughed threw bloody teeth when he was finished, her body melted on the cold floorboards. Of course, it was nothing too bad, just a few blows to the cheek and jaw. She laughed, not at him, not at herself. At this, at her life, there was so much around her she had, yet she missed the things she didn't. Things lost to the light, and even the things lost to the darkness.

Was it truly mad to ask for a softer down spiral?

"You're going to school." He whispered calmly, and thats what made it so scary.
"Tomorrow."

Aelin's laughing stopped slowly as she picked herself and her belongings up and stalked back up to that room. She didn't look him in the eye, just shook her head.

The bags weight didn't make up for the lost feeling in her chest. Ruben, you cant punish her with a distraction from this life.

Aelin mind was on Sams sleep that night, rather than her own.

It took two days but he kept his word. Finally she was registered for a high school name that was obnoxiously familiar.

Even if her only routine in the mornings were getting dressed and brushing teeth Aelin found herself getting up at 4:30 just to walk to that school. She didn't argue, and he had dropped the subject of burning clothes. A simple trade.

She took a shortcut threw the forest before she was finally on a sidewalk close to there.
Of course Ruben wouldn't drive her.
Selfish, cruel, intimate.

The other kids at school slurred her with comments and questions about her dark clothes and deathly quiet persona- nothing cruel, just curious. How such a scary looking girl could have the face of such innocent beauty.

She ignored them all. They stopped asking, and Aelin assumed their fear.

There was one girl, however, that decided to stop her in the hallway and start shoving her and made a scene out of it. Aelin made a good show of kicking the girl threw a door straight into study hall.

Nobody talked to her after that.

Ruben waited for hours to hear the front doors drum open, and for Aelin to be home.

He shouldn't feel bad for sending her off, and he wasn't trying to make a show out of her by doing so. He shouldn't feel guilt or anger, but Aelin.. he could just think of the way her head tilted when something remotely encouraged her attention.. no, she wouldn't care about school

And no, he definitely did not feel guilty.

It wasn't punishment more as he needed her out of the house for him to continue his experiments.

She was like him in a way, ironic enough with all those years spend in Haydens hands. It made him want to learn more about this girl that seemed so untouchable.

What material was she made of?

He looked at the clock. It was eight o'clock, noon. She should be home by now, that.. that.. how irresponsible could she be? He gives her a will of freedom and she abuses her time given? He huffed, he should continue his work. Should, but he made his way to her room instead.
