y/n sat in the back corner where no attention remained on her,
and let her pencil drag across the paper to trace shapes of some sort.
she was bored out of her mind.
listening to her history teacher dredge on with such a monotone voice should be considered a crime.
all she wanted to do was read.
she wanted to escape this cruel world and travel into one anew.
one where happy endings existed,
where love prevailed,
where families were happy.
she hated the restrictions on her reading time in this school.
how it was only allowed during 'silent reading time.'
she shook her head conspicuously at the thought.
bullshit.
was is this?
second grade?
she thought harshly.
she only began to realize just how unsafe she felt in life.
how trapped she felt in this little town.
she bared down on her pencil so hard,
it broke beneath the pressure.
the sudden crack of it made her flinch,
which drew the attention of the boy in front of her,
"you must be new. i'm mike,"
he beamed with excitement.
y/n only nodded her head in reply.
"and you are?"
he asked.
she swallowed hard while her heart fluttered in her ribcage,
"y/n."
he nodded his head full of curls,
his smile still plastered on his freckled face.
"y/n. i like that."
the words echoed in her head,
and his smile seemed to stamp itself across her mind.
he likes my name.
she began to wonder if maybe living here wouldn't be so bad after all,
but she then reminded herself of wishful thinking and how hurtful it could be.
"hey. um, a bunch of my friends and i are hanging out today after school if you'd like to join. i know being new is hard. so..we-we can be friends if you'd like."
he suggested.
y/n was being offered a friend.
multiple ones at that.
without missing a beat,
she nodded her head with a faint, genuine smile,
"yeah. i'll be there."
"okay! yeah. um, just meet me at the front of the school and we'll ride to my house together."
"ride-ride home?"
she asked with the tilt of her head,
growing confused.
"d-do you not have a bike?"
she couldn't hide her quick snicker,
"no, i don't. i walk to school."
"oh, that's okay. you can ride on the back of mine."
mike offered.
she nodded her head,
"sounds like a plan."

y/n waited outside of the school for her new friend,
mike,
to meet up with her.
she was practically writhing in anticipation thinking about the future events of today.
but as she looked around,
she realized she couldn't find him anywhere.
she came to the conclusion she was stood up.
y/n laughed to herself,
though without humor,
and looked down at her creased shoes.
what did she expect?
she should've known something like this was gonna happen sooner or later.
y/n felt the disappointment solidify within her gut,
and it only tighten as she turned on her feet to walk away.
"y/n! wait!"
mike's voice called out,
echoing throughout the sky.
she turned around,
and felt a smile tug at the corners of her lips
thank god.
"sorry i'm late. this idiot, dustin, got stuck at his locker."
he explained while unlocking the chained bike.
his friends followed closely behind,
doing the same.
they all stared.
and y/n hated it.
she felt weird.
she felt like a freak.
"dustin."
one smiled,
nodding his head at her rather friendly.
"lucas,"
he said without meeting her eye.
"i'm will."
he waved.
she smiled sheepishly and sent a small wave back.
"y/n."
she watched them hop on the rusted bikes,
then looked back at mike for further instruction.
"you can get on mine!"
dustin offered.
y/n turned to look at him and let a shy laugh escape past her lips.
the sound seemed rather foreign to y/n.
it was genuine,
and she was surprised.
"i'm sure she'd like to ride with me instead,"
will argued.
"mines...available,"
lucas shrugged and continued to avoid meeting her eye.
"or,"
mike stepped in with his eyebrows furrowed,
"you can ride with me."
was y/n being fought over?
surely not.
she wasn't used to this kind of positive, light attention.
she had grown accustomed to the laughter and stares thrown her way,
but this was entirely different.
all she could do was stand in silence and worry about her next move.
she didn't want to hurt their feelings by rejecting them.
they were all so sweet and welcoming,
such a quick decision was sure to bruise the egos of these growing teens.
they all stared at the girl frozen with fear,
making mike groan aloud.
"good job guys. you freaked her out! come on, j-just hop on mine."
he smiled,
tapping the free space behind them.
without hesitation,
y/n positioned herself behind mike and held his shoulders carefully.
she could hear his faint chuckle as she did.
but as he turned around to face her,
the freckles that danced across his cheeks and his bright smile sparked something new within y/n.
"welcome to our little gang, y/n!"
dustin cheered.
y/n suddenly wasn't as alone as she imagined she'd be.
she now had friends.
