The day was finally here. The past few months dragged on, preparing and planning everything for what was going to be the greatest night of your life so far. It was your senior prom, your last real hurrah with your classmates before graduation. You felt like the luckiest girl in the world because you happened to have the perfect date.

Alex Gaskarth was your best friend since you were seven years old, when he moved in next door to you. You guys were pretty much inseparable from that point on, even through those times when it wasn’t cool for boys and girls to be friends. It was your luck that besides being the nicest guy on the planet, Alex had also grown into one of the most attractive. Girls fought over Alex like he was a winning lottery ticket. While he’d entertained a few over the years, he was never too serious with anyone.

You had thought about being with Alex too, of course, more often than you care to admit. People were always telling you two you should be together, and you guys always laughed it off. Still, in the back of your mind, you did have somewhat of crush on him. You were just smart enough to know he was too big a part of your life to risk complicating it in that way.

One day, in early March, just as prom buzz was starting and who was going with who was all anyone could talk about, you got a text from Alex to meet you in the courtyard for lunch. It wasn’t your usual spot; it was always crowded and loud. Still, you agreed and navigated through the maze to find him sitting on a bench in the middle, guitar in his lap.

He looked up and saw you and began playing. Everyone started looking on, the space no longer loud but filled with whispers as everyone tried to figure out what was going on. You realized what he was playing— your favorite song. He sang along and you were frozen where you stood, entranced by Alex’s amazing voice from the first note to the last.

"Lex, that was beautiful," your voice was barely audible.

"I’m glad you liked it, Y/N. I um," he blushed and bit his lip, a nervous habit of his. "I was wondering if you would like to go to prom with me?"

Your jaw dropped. As far as you knew, six different girls had asked Alex to prom. You figured he’d take him pick of the litter. You never imagined he would ask you. You smiled widely as you said “I would love to go to prom you.” Alex put down his guitar and hugged you while everyone clapped around you.

Now, almost three months later, prom was finally here. There were a lot of rumors about you and Alex dating in between. Your own friends even considered him asking you to prom to be his grand declaration of love. It was really special, but you didn’t think that’s what it was. Alex was the kind of guy who didn’t do anything half-assed, even if it was asking his best friend to prom. He’d want it to be the kind of thing you remembered, even if you weren’t going with a guy you were actually with.

You adjusted your dress in the mirror for what must have been the 30th time as your mom called your name. “Y/N sweetie, Alex is here!” You gave yourself one more good look before you walked down the stairs.

Your parents and Alex’s marveled over how beautiful you looked, but all you were focused on was Alex. He looked incredible in his tux, caramel brown hair mussed up perfectly and a huge smile on his face. You caught yourself fighting the urge to run over there and kiss him. This was your best friend here. Just because he was your prom date didn’t mean this was an actual “date.”

"You clean up nice, Gaskarth," you nodded your head at him.

"You’re not half bad yourself, Y/N," he smiled, pulling you in for a hug.

Your parents proceeded to take just about eight million pictures before the limo had arrived with your other friends inside. You guys snuck a bottle of champagne in, toasting to the night ahead. Prom itself was never really the highlight of anyone’s night. It was the after-party that everyone was hyped for.
