Kira's POV
Song of Chapter: Not today by BTS (Ik these songs don't match the Chapters)
The bell rung, signaling that sixth hour was over and that lunch was now starting. I stood up with a sigh and grabbed my binder and sped past students walking past me in a different directions.
Once I arrived in the school's library, I set down my things and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear with my right hand. I felt slightly sad that I usually eat by myself but I ended up shrugging it off as I dropped my hand from my ear to my side and looked up at the rows of books in the romance section.
Yes, I am a romance reader.
I walked down the aisle until my finger automatically grabbed for the same place where one my favorite book has been for, "Shatter me" by Tahereh Mafi. I looked at the cover for a second and set it back into its place. 'I'll find a new different book to read,' I thought, walking past the romance aisle and into the other aisle of other romances.
I looked at the different books and all set them back into its place. I let out another sigh, looking around for a book to read. Then suddenly my eyes set on a book named, "Venom" by Fiona Paul. (A/N a great book btw. I would rate it 5/5) I read the description, completely interested as I didn't notice a male figure walk beside me.
"Boo." I jumped away, a scream escaping my lips and I felt my stomach drop from my sudden fear. Then when my feet landed onto the floor again, I looked over and saw a guy bending over and laughing at me as I caught my breath and composed myself. I glared at him as he slapped his knee, clearly ignoring the fact that he almost made me drop the book. I huffed annoyed as I was getting ready to scold him for interrupting me but I as I opened my mouth I closed it. Then I sighed, dropping my gaze away. 'Probably not a good idea.' I say to myself as I drew a breath and eased it out of my body.
"Wow... um..." the male trailed off in a fit of laughter as he tried to compose himself. "Um..." another laugh, "Gimme a sec." He said, a laugh bubbling from his chest as he coughed, his face red. I rolled my eyes as I crossed my arms and shifted most of my weight onto my left hip with the book in my hand, unamused.
"Are you done?" I snapped, a little surprised when it came out sassier than I anticipated.
The male cleared his throat as he stood straight up.
"Yes." He replied, running his tan hand through his sandy blonde hair. I eyed him, as I curtained my face. He wore dark blue jeans with a black shirt that was covered with a black leather jacket that matched his converse highs. His eyes were dark ocean blue with a little green showing in a dimmed glimmer as his hair was a dark sandy blondish gold.
As if sensing my scanning, he took out his hand as if to shake mine, "I'm Daniel Summers." He introduced, still awkwardly holding out his hand as he waited for me to introduce myself. I flicked my gaze up to him and his to hand hand a few times before giving in and shaking his hand.
"I'm Kira Sammons." I say, hating how my voice came out quiet and shy. Daniel nodded, stepping back from me and taking his hand away.
"That's a pretty name." He complimented, turning away from me and pulling out a book from his backpack that I didn't notice he had earlier. He turned back towards me. "Sorry for scaring you," he apologized, placing the book into a gap next to him, "I usually scare people." He paused his actions for a quick second, then, "Well for the reactions." He rephrased, going back to pulling out a romance novel. I rolled my eyes before going back to trailing his every move as if I was a robot with a camera in its eyes. Daniel paused again, looking over at me. "Are you just gonna stand there and stare at me?" I shrugged.
"Maybe, maybe not." I say, looking to my right and studying the books beside me. Daniel laughed, packing three books into his backpack.
"I like you." He comments before grabbing a book and reading the description. I looked at him in the corner of my eye, not bothering to say anything as I wondered why he was talking to me.
I looked away, feeling a bit lighter as I was actually having human interaction with someone other else than my dad, brother, and Axel. I let out a silent sigh. Daniel was probably new since I've never seen him around before. Shifting to face a row of books, I told myself, 'Minus well enjoy it before Axel and Gabe push him away from me.'
"So," Daniel sighed suddenly, making me snap out of my thoughts. He turned to me, holding out two books. "Which one? 'Maximum Ride?' Or 'Embrace?'" He asks, moving his head to move his hair from his eyes.
"Umm..." I thought, suddenly panicking because no one has ever asked my opinion. My eyes darted to the two books. "Embrace?" I suggested awkwardly, my voice still quiet and tiny.
Daniel laughed, shaking his head as he slid the other book into its place.
"Nice pick." He says, wrapping up his backpack away onto his back. I watched him awkwardly as I weighed if I should say something or just keeping silence.
"It's rare to see a guy reading a romance book." I comment, turning to face him. Daniel chuckled as his dimples showed.
"I'm one of a kind then." He replies, zipping up his jacket. "But actually I like the heartbreak and how the couples find each other again because of it." I smile, a real one.
"Really?" I say excitedly, my voice less tiny and shy and more outgoing. Daniel jumped back slightly in surprise, not that I blame him. My voice was just an angels and now sounded like the freaking Hulk. But I'm book crazy so.
"Umm yeah." He said, as I watched him look at his watch on his wrist.
Daniels eyes nearly popped out of his sockets.
"Oh crap!" He curses, darting past a row of books and then changing his mind and walking back.
"What?" I ask, scrunching my eyebrows as I watch him have a mental meltdown.
"We're late for class!" He throws his hands up in the air, "We're fifteen minutes late!" I laugh at his expression as I waved him away with my hand.
"It's fine." I say clicking my tongue, "Usually Mrs. Lantez lets me skip. She'll probably will let your teacher know that you were hanging out with me." He stopped pacing and looked up at me.
"Really? She lets you skip?" He asks, going back to pacing. I duck my head avoiding his eyes.
"Yeah." The reason why Mrs. Lantez lets me skip is because she knows my brother is abusive to me and she knows that other kids here pick on me since my brother spread false rumors around the school.
But I didn't tell Daniel that because for the first time in my life.
I made my first friend.
