(Y/n) sat on the hard surface of the wood planks, an untouched book rested patiently on her lap, seemingly waiting for it's seducing allure to enchant (Y/n) into reading through it's contents until nightfall, but the girl was more interested in watching her family walk happily on the beach, gaining more and more distance from her.

She knew she should have been down there with them, enjoying this windy spring day, but she felt more content on the wooden platform- that and maybe the wind blowing all the sand around hurt her bare ankles until she felt like considering death.

I should've brought freaking boots for this, if there's such a thing as beach boots.

Taking in the lovely ocean breeze, she couldn't help but relish in the salty taste she was getting, surely one didn't need a bathing suit to enjoy the beach, because she sure was, and her family too apparently, her younger brother gave an ecstatic cry, diving his hand down to the ground and picking up something flat and white- "a sand dollar!" He cried in triumph.

As her younger sister howled in frustration at his smug smile, the teenager watched with little interest as her mother scolded the two for fighting and her father continued to scower the sand for more sand dollars, (Y/n) couldn't bring herself to care to notice the sigh on her lips.

Why was she here? She loved her family, of course, they were actually really cool, sure she might've not been particularly fond of her father- for many reasons, and her siblings were real bitches when they wanted to be- especially in the mornings, her mother was her best friend, she could say in all honesty that she adored her mother, the only times when she would get annoyed is when she crossed the lines of her privacy.

But, she also couldn't deny that even with them, they just weren't enough, so perhaps the problem was friends?

Her best friend from before she could even remember- had recently cut ties in a not so mutual fashion, (Y/n) couldn't tell whether she's moved on or not, but that was probably a no since her heart stung within her chest last time they interacted.

Though, (Y/n) had a new squad with her now- even if it was awkward to just sit there and wait for a conversation that she actually understood to pop up, things on the friends side was looking up, yet.

She still missed something, a spark of some kind.

Listening as her family continued to chat and bicker, she tucked the book underneath her arm and headed off into the opposite direction, clicking her tongue whenever the wind pelted her with the sand.

Nothing can make this better.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Walking longer and longer than she realized, she moved on, head down and eyes on nothing but the painful whirling sand around her, pausing in her pace when she suddenly saw a- rock? A large one at that.

Finally raising her head to see where she was going, (Y/n) blinked at the towering boulders piling up one another at the very edge of where the beach stretched, blinking in both confusion and indifference.

When did I get this far?

Only now did she hear the strengthening waves pound against the great stones, giving her the curious idea of many things she could discover in those gaps and tide pools.

Turning away from the intimidating formation, she gently raised a brow at how distant everything looked from where she stood, her family looking more like a pack of ants, not seeming to have noticed her disappearing act.
