The next day, I planned to visit my cousins at another baryo. It was only fifteen minutes away by tricycle. I remember my cousin Jade, Fe and Angela. We were all really close back in the days, but I found out a year ago that they were all pregnant and getting married. They're still so young, I thought. I wondered, if I stayed here in the Philippines, would I end up like them? I sure hope not. Imagining myself pregnant, soon to be mom right now, sounds rather terrifying. I just wanted a boyfriend. No screw that, I don't want to be in a relationship. Actually no, I don't know what I want.
See? I'm so not ready. I don't know what the hell I want.
When we arrived in front of my cousin Jade's house, I see a little boy right in front, who I assume to be Jade's son.
"EL!" I heard Jade before I saw her coming out of the front door.
"JADE!" I exclaimed and hugged her.
"Long time no see,"
"Yeah, ay, marikit lay eyang" (You're so grown up now!)she said in our region's dialect language which I still understood, but couldn't speak. Eyang was the nickname they gave me when I was a child.
"Kumusta kana? May boyfriend ka na ba? Gwapo ba mga puti?" (How are you? Do you have a boyfriend? Are white guys handsome?) she asked. Here we go again. People seemed to know all about my relationship status. Well, unfortunately for them, I didn't have a love life. She also asks if I knew any other "white men" who were good looking. I looked at her weirdly. "Don't you have a husband?" I asked. "Yeah, I'm just messing with you. Plus it was only a question. Relax."
"Okay, anyway..." I changed the subject, talking about what happened for the past ten or so years since I've been gone.
