Jeremy held his mommy's hand as he walked into the school. He looked around at all the pretty trophies and awards that the school had in a big display case. He stared at them with his nose pressed against the glass.
"Mommy, what's participation?" He asked his mother as she filled out paperwork. Mrs.Heere looked up from the clipboard.
"Well baby, when you participate that means that's you're involved in the event. You didn't necessarily win, but you showed up. Like when you take a test but you don't make a good grade, you still participated."
Jeremy looked from his mommy to the display case.
"This school musta participated in lotsa stuff, because that glass case over there has that word a lot."
Mrs. Heere laughed quietly and then turned back to her paperwork. Jeremy started to wander around the big school as he waited for his mom to finish her work. He was wandering around for a while when he bumped into a kid and they both fell down. Jeremy quickly got up and helped the other boy to his feet.
"Sorry." The boy adjusted his glasses as he stood up. Then he smiled at Jeremy, holding his hand out.
"It's okay. I'm Michael." Jeremy shook Michael's hand and smiled back.
"Where's your mommy?" Jeremy asked. Michael looked around. All around them were parents and teachers, but nobody Michael knew.
"I-I dunno." Michael said. He started to sweat as all the people rushed around him and Jeremy. They were talking really loud, and it really hurt his ears. Michael's eyes started to water.
"Are you okay?" Jeremy took Michael's hand. Michael felt a little comforted by the contact but not enough.
"Too many people, too loud!" Jeremy led Michael through the crowd until they made it to a quiet area. Nobody was in this part of the school. It was completely dark except for a light at the end of the hall. Jeremy heard small sniffles.
He turned to find Michael with tears running down his cheeks as he clutched Jeremy's hand tightly.
"I want my momma." He said, looking all around them. Jeremy squeezed Michael's hand tighter as they both looked around.
"Me too. But if it's okay, I can stay with you until we find her." Michael looked up at Jeremy. He smiled and nodded his head as they started to walk down the hallway.
They reached the end of the hallway and heard voices. Jeremy stayed close to the wall as he looked around the corner. There was a taller man and a shorter boy talking next to the bathrooms.
"Look man I'm here for-" The shorter boy looked around, his eyes looking right past the two small boys. He leaned in close. "A squip."
The taller man crossed his arms as he looked the shorter boy up and down. "A squip? Are you sure you can handle it?" The shorter boy groaned.
"Dude I need it! My life is hell right now! If I were to have one of those squips, I'd be able to finally have an actual good year in high school!"
The taller man stared at the boy. Then he sighed. He reached in his pocket and pulled out an Altoids mint container.
"Alright. Take this with green Mountain Dew. Don't tell anyone that you took it and don't tell anyone when you got it from unless instructed, got it?"
"Yes! Yes! Thank you!" The boy reached in his pocket and pulled out 600 dollars. He handed it to the man, who in turn handed him the container. The boy pocketed the container and shook the man's hand.
"Thanks again." He said, before walking away from the man and towards Jeremy and Michael. They hurriedly ducked under a desk as the man came around the corner.
When he was gone, they got out from under the desk.
"What was that?" Jeremy shrugged. "I dunno, but I think we should get outta here." He grabbed Michael's hand and they took off running down the hallway.
When they turned the corner they ran into someone else. Jeremy looked up to see his mother looking down at him with a shocked and relieved look on her face. Another woman stood next to her.
"Momma!" Michael yelled as he dropped Jeremy's hand and ran into the arms of the lady. She picked him up and hugged him while Mrs. Heere did the same.
"Oh I was so worried about you Jeremy! You can't just run off like that! You could get hurt." His mother lectured. Then she looked at Michael.
"Who's your friend?" She asked. Jeremy's face lit up.
"That's Michael. He's awesome and I like his glasses 'cuz they're so big and he's so small but he's awesome anyway." Michael smiled and waved. Mrs. Heere and Mrs. Mell shook hands.
"Momma can Jeremy come over to our house? Pretty please?" He pouted at his mother.
"Only if it's okay with his mom." Both Jeremy and Michael pouted at Mrs. Heere.
"It's okay with me." Mrs. Mell and Mrs. Heere set Jeremy and Michael down as they got each other's phone numbers.
"Jeremy?" Michael walked over to him.
"Yeah?"
"Can I hold your hand again?" Michael blushed. Jeremy grabbed his hand and squeezed it as their mothers continued to talk.

This one is adorable and I absolutely love it! I imagine Jeremy and Michael being in kindergarten around this time. Sorry if they don't sound like kindergarteners, but I did my best.
