Sixteen-year-old Hazel Dean is harboring a secret, one that is slowly eating her up on the inside. When her aunt offers for Hazel to live with her for a school year, Hazel jumps at the chance to escape the guilt that surrounds her and her family.

Hazel soon meets Jo Fredericks, an edgy outcast who convinces Hazel to join her band. But Hazel has one condition: they must find another lead singer. The search finishes with Harry Styles, a cute, quirky foreign exchange student with a taste for indifference and suede boots. Through their band practices and spontaneous road trips, the two new kids form a bond.

But just as it is turning into something more, Hazel is faced with the realization that it's been a really long time since she has trusted anyone but herself. But there's something different about Harry. It may be his adventure streak or bravery, which Hazel lacks but loves. She wants nothing more than to be brave, and Harry is just the person to show her how.
