The next morning, I lie in bed and stare at the ceiling. I haven't been able to sleep all night. It's 4:36 AM and Kiara should be here. She's not. Yet.
Within minutes a nurse in a white smock comes in. Her blonde hair flows down her back. Very few split ends to be seen. She writes her name on the board, Vanessa. "Where's Kiara?" I ask her silently, my voice horse and full of curiosity. "She's not in today, something happened and she isn't feeling very well." She turns around, Vanessa's face is full of makeup. He face looks powdered and her lipstick is a bright red, and her eye shadow is a dark green.
My head begins to fill with millions of questions at once, 'Is she okay?' 'What happened?' 'Why can't she see me?' "Do you know when she's coming back?" I clear my thoat as she sets a cup of pills and another cup filled with water on my dinner tray. The new nurse shakes her head and checks my vitals. "No idea hun." she replied. She obviously wanted no conversation, so I kept to myself and took the pills I was given. The nurse picks up her things and walks out the door, closing it behind her. My eyes then feel heavy as I fall into a deep sleep.
Several hours later I wake up. I see a figure in the chair next to me. My eyes adjust and it's Kiara, my heart flutters a little as the monitor continues to beep slowly at a constant rate. She looks absoulutely miserable. Her makeup is smeared, her eyes look like they haven't slept for days. Her mascara is now at the bottom of her eye, creating dark circles underneath them. Her lipstick is wiped off and now on her sleeve of her shirt. She sits uncomfortablly in the chair, slouching. Her hair is now in a messy bun. I study her closely, she's asleep. Her black v-neck is beginning to show her breasts. She looks beautiful. To me at least. I can watch her all day, if it didn't make me look like a creep. I lean over, hovering my hand over her breasts. She moans slowly as I begin to fix her shirt, I move the shirt back over her bra. I lean back, better. I don't want her vulnerable to me the way I currently am to her. She's definetly different than the rest. I care for her.
Kiara's eyes flutter open. She looks at me and smiles, "Hey. You're awake." She sits up straight and reaches for her purse next to the comfortable chair. "You're here. Vanessa said you weren't feeling well today." I sit up in my bed. Kiara's eyes begin to water, "Hey, Doll. Are you okay?" I reach for the tissue box on the other side of my bed and hand it to her. She nods and takes a tissue, "Something happened last night with Dion. The fiance I was mentioning." Kiara then tells me evercything, about the abuse from when they were dating, his friends, and the incident with the Coke last night. I felt for her, abuse is common. She can't get out of it. "I want to leave him, believe me I do. But, I can't he'd hurt me." Kiara sobs softly.
I hate seeing her like this, "I want to help. Once I get better, we could run away." I say. She looks baffled, "Run away? He'd just follow, he could kill you." I frown. 'I'd do anything for you' I tell myself quietly. "I have nothing more to lose, I've already tried to kill myself, and it failed. If he were to kill me, that would just make a success on both our parts." I smile gently. This time, it's Kiara's turn to frown, "You'd lose me." She reaches for my hand, and intertwines it with mine. The steady beat of the monitor begins to beep faster. "Let me try..." I trail off.
Our fingers are still intertwined with one another, Kiara lays her head on my bed. My other hand plays with her hair. Her eyes flutter closed and her breathing steadies, I watch her closely. The small freckles sprinkled on her nose, the way her eyelashes flitter when they're closed. She's so beautiful. Without thinking, "I love you." comes out of my mouth in a whisper. Well, at least it's out in the open.
