Prequel
A few years ago, scientists were attempting to find a cure for cancer… And everything went terribly wrong.
The cancer cure wasn’t a cure for cancer at all but, a terrible disease. The treatment started off with instant death or, so they thought. The so-called dead person was actually in so much pain that they were paralysed completely.
As the possibility of there being a virus that could completely take over a person’s body was so minuscule, nobody was prepared. As of now, 60% of the population of Australia is infected. All boats, planes and any other transportation available to go to or from Australia has been terminated.
According to the rest of the world, Australia doesn't exist!
The people infected with the cancer ‘cure’, otherwise known as the plague or the virus, go by many names. Some call them Zombies -though that’s technically not correct as their not dead-, others call them the Infected or the lost ones.
The appearance of the Infected is similar to an everyday human except, their saliva has been transformed in to a deadly venom which spreads the plague to an uninfected human once it has entered the blood stream. When the venom enters the bloodstream, the human victim is in unbearable pain until the blood is no longer clean. This process can take different amounts of time, depending on the amount of venom in the body, the size of the body, the area in which the victim was bitten and, a few other factors. Its currently unknown if the victim can be saved as, the Infected are too dangerous living.
There are scientists attempting to find a cure, in the same way there are hunters trying to kill the Infected.
The hunters are usually people with nothing to lose, just like my sister, India, and myself. We’ve lost both our parents to the plague, without our family, we decided we would hunt down the infected, and kill them.
We often take the bodies to the scientists to play with but, that’s not often as it’s difficult to know if the Infected are actually dead. A lot of blood needs to leave the Infected’s body –much, much more than it takes to kill a normal human- and, it would be dangerous to cart an infected person through the city.
Though the Infected are difficult to kill, my sister and I are good hunters as our father taught us how to hunt animals, before they got him.
You see, the virus wasn’t always around, there was a time when ‘virus’ meant you had the flu and the ‘plague’ had died off in the 1300’s, not that a killer virus had taken ultimate control of your body and, back then, I had the best life a girl could have; I had loving, hands-on parents, a sister who’s my best friend and an all-round happy life but, then the virus took over. My parents got infected in an early wave, still alive apparently… Well, not alive but, their bodies still functioning –I’m not sure whether to be ecstatic or terrified- and, my sister and I became dedicated hunters of the Infected.
Indie and I normally stick to the city boundaries, protecting the relatively safe city from a virus outbreak but, on one particular day, we ventured out of city limits.
That was the day I lost my little sister to the plague.
