“Breaking News” The television reporter announced in a worried voice, “Massive outbreak of a terrible disease created accidently. The disease is known to make humans feel a hunger for human flesh. Bold your doors everybody!” He yells and the television screen turns black.
“Bullshit!” My father yelled suddenly, scaring me half to death, “What’s the date, April first? How do they expect us to believe that?!”
“What do you mean?” My little sister, Indie asked.
“I mean, they are trying to tell us that we have a Zombie Apocalypse in our midst!” My father yelled and after, he scoffed at the television
Indie smiles at my father as he pushes himself up and away from the couch, “They didn’t say it was Zombies, dad’’
I wipe away tears at the memory. My father’s now dead at the hand of the Zombie Apocalypse he once scoffed at, as is my mother. My little sister and I are the only people I once knew who are still alive or, human at least.
How wrong they were thinking that it just made humans turn cannibal.
I quickly hop off my mattress on the wood floor, remembering I have a job to do. I hurry over to the pile of clothes at the foot of my mattress and grab a camouflage T-shirt and a pair of jeans. I pull them on quickly and purposely kick the mattress which is on the other side of the room from mine
“Get up, India” I say as I kick the mattress again, knowing that Indie won’t get up unless I am harsh. I feel bad for it, especially under the circumstances but, you got to do what you got to do!
I kick the mattress again and Indie shoots up, screaming. I cover her mouth, we don’t need people to be worried that there’s an Infected person in here.
India stops screaming when she figures I’m not trying to eat her face.
“Hey” She whispers with a slight smile on her face.
“Hey, Indie. Get up, we’re going out of the city today.” I say as I get up from my position, kneeling on her bed.
India gulps heavily. I know for certain that she’s been terrified, she sleeps talks and she hasn’t shut up about this but, it’s necessary! “D-do we have to go, Katie?” She asks quietly.
“Yes, we really do, Indie,” I begin as I kneel down next to her again, “We have put this off long enough! You put it off for a month, then a fortnight and then three days after that! I will not put this off another minute,” her face falls as she knows I am dead serious, “Indie, we have sold most of our furniture,” I say, pointing towards my unmade mattress, “We used all that money on equipment which, now need more ammunition. If we put it off any longer, we will be fighting the Infected with our bare hands!”
Scientists will pay a lot of money for an Infected person. Money which we need…
She sighs in defeat, “Fine, I’ll go, but I have a bad feeling about this”
I laugh with her and say, “I do, too”
I get back onto my two legs and go to pack my bag as Indie gets dressed. We have no clue of what lies ahead of us, neither of us have been outside the city walls since that news report.
When I have finished packing my bag, I swing it on my back and get my special belt which holds a hand gun and bullets and wrap it around my waist.
“Katie! Kate!” India yells, surprising me. I quickly grab my gun from my belt and swing around to face India, thinking that she’s in trouble. She quickly raises her hands and drops what she’s holding, her eyes panicked though, its usual for me to bring out my gun when unnecessary. I am very wary in that way.
