After driving for a few hours we finally come to a stop. Looking up from my book I see Violet staring, her mouth agape from the sight. Her eyes well up with tears and I reach forward to touch her shoulder.
"What's u-" I look in front of us.
The town that was apparently extremely safe had been overrun by biters. Blood and biters everywhere, only a few people left alive but running too fast to notice the roaring Jeep that sits parked outside the the toppled gate. Roger reaches to Violets hand on the gearshift and I notice tears pricking his eyes too. Their home has been overrun. I didn't know how to feel until I saw a familiar face among the biters. My own brother. Did he escape from prison? Why didn't he come straight home? A sharp pain in my chest causes a sting in my eyes.
"Vio.. we have to go.. it's too dangerous to be here now.." Roger finally speaks up, his voice shaking.
The dyed-red haired girl nods slowly before shifting to first gear on the shift. I sit back in my seat and curl into a ball, my knees tucked up to my chest. Small tears sting my cheeks as I dwell on my brothers decomposed face as his limping body slowly moves toward a random lady holding a small ginger haired boy. I sit in the back of the Jeep, sobbing in silence. Although he wasn't the best brother, he was still my brother.
"Ash, honey, are you okay?" Violets voice was now raspy and shaking, we had all been crying for a while during this ride and this was the first time anyone had spoken up.
"I... I saw...." my voice cracks and tears continue flowing down my face.
"You saw what, dear?"
"M-my... my brother..."
"Oh..."
The vehicle went silent. Only the sounds of our shaking breath and some gasps for air as we all still continued to silently sob. So much for a safe place to stay..
