"Jessica! Amy! Wait up!" I turned around to see Will running towards us. I felt my heart flutter but I pushed the feeling away. I just met him! I can't possibly like him.... When he got closer I turned back around and started walking again.
"Please don't call me that. You can call me Jessie or not talk to me at all."
"No, I'm assuming everyone else calls you that name, so I'm gonna make up my own nickname. Um... Jessie-Bessie?"
"No, that makes it sound like I'm a cow," I remarked, remembering the line from the play Our Town.
"Okay... You do know you're making this harder than it has to be, right? Wait! I got it! I'll call you Jess!" I smiled slightly and felt my cheeks heat up. I looked up at him and smiled widely.
"Jess. I like it." He smiled and we kept walking.
"Hey, Lovebirds! Don't leave me out! I ain't no third wheel!" Amy said with an annoyed tone. I laughed slightly and responded.
"Double negative, Amy! You just said that you are a third wheel!" Will looked down at me and smiled.
"So I'm gonna guess that you're pretty smart?" He asked politely.
"Kind of. I'm the smartest in our reading class, but I'm not smart enough to be in the advanced class." When I thought things couldn't get any better, life had to be a bitch.
"Hey Jessica. Looks like you've met my boyfriend?" Laurey Williams said. She's one of those popular sluts who has probably fucked every boy at this school. She is also, for some reason, bent on making my life a living hell.
"I'm sorry, do I know you?" Will asked her. She looked really pissed.
"You didn't, but now you do. So, I have a proposition, Will. I'm the most popular girl here and you're the boy everyone's talking about. Now, you can stay friends with these two retards or you can be my boyfriend and upgrade your social status even more. What's your choice?"
"Thanks for the offer Laurey, but I'm fine with Jess and Amy." He linked his arm in mine and Amy's and walked us away.
"What the hell was that? You had the choice to become popular or become trash and you chose to become trash? Why!" I quietly shouted. He looked at me and smiled serenely.
"Because Jess. I know people like those girls and I know what they do to others. It's not right, and I won't be a part of it. Besides, I'm pretty sure she'd cheat on me with everyone on the football team! Now come on, show me to the cafeteria. I'm starving!"
