5:34am... 23 hours after my shift had started my pager bleeps, I awake suddenly, secretly holding for a major trauma, as the shift had been slow, but realised that it was Ms Beauchamp.

The dread, have I made a mistake has a patient died on my watch...

I made my way from the 2nd floor on call room, the elevator seemed to take much longer the fear building of what could have happened, as I enter she looks at me with the cold steely eyes and the cold smile, the one that strikes fear into any registrars heart, I'm thinking please don't have messed up, she tells me to take a seat. "Ethan you've been here what 3 years know and I want to help you get ready for you consultancy exam, that's if you want my help" I looked at her in great disbelief, "as you know we've recently received extra funding for another consultant and you've demonstrated excellent potential and I would like you to become the next consultant to join our team." "Yes, yes Ms Beauchamp" that was all I managed to stutter, thought of what happened to Cal came rushing back and I thought I can make call proud, Ms Beauchamp looked at me "are you ok Ethan, you look disappointed, I mean I can always ask someone else." "No, no I'm ready to take the next step in my career." Thinking I wasn't expecting this for at least another year, she really wants me to be the next consultant in Emergency Medicine, what an honour!

The emergency red telephone hanging on the wall outside Ms Beauchamp's office, we looked at each other and knew something good was about to come in...
