Chapter One: You Have Got To Be Kidding Me
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BE—!
I reached over to the alarm clock that sat on my nightstand table and shut it off. Groaning and pulling my blankets over my head, I sigh and pull myself out of bed. I walked over to my bathroom and avoided looking at myself in the mirror, not wanting to see my pillows master piece.
I quickly hoped in the shower and washed my hair and body then got out and wrapped a towel around me and walked into my room. I searched through my room until I found the outfit I thought may be presentable on the first day of my Junior year.
To say I was excited would be an underestimate. This year was the year I was going to be noticed.
I got a pair of light blue jean shorts and a crop top with a little black and white palm tree in the middle. I quickly got dressed and walked into the bathroom at the same time as trying to put my sandals on.
I quickly brushed and blow dried my hair, did my makeup and rushed into the living room and said a quick hello. I grabbed a yogurt out of the fridge and went outside to start my car. Then I was on my way to pick up my best friend, Cecelia. She and I have been friends for a while and we did a lot together, some even say they have never seen us apart, that, my friend, is a lie.
I got there and picked her up and on the way to school she managed to rant on about how exciting this year is going to be, and how many guys are going to be after her. Two minutes into the conversation, if you can even call it that, I blanked her out and thought to myself.
‘Shelby,’ she yelled and I snapped out of my thought and looked at her then mumbled an incoherent what and then put my eyes back on the road.
‘Are you even listening to me, let me answer that. NO. Anyway I was saying…have you heard about the new kid, I haven’t seen him in person yet but by the sound of his name, he sounds cute.’ She paused and I looked at her skeptically.
‘How do you even know this there are probably over 30 new kids every year…not counting freshman.’
‘Well, I just know. I heard somebody talking about it…anyway his name is Luke. He’s a Senior but still… he’s fine as hell I seen a picture of him on Instagram…and damn let me tell you!-' I cut her off.
‘I get it he is new and he is cute can we, for once, make it to school without you ranting about something?’
She was quiet for the rest of the ride to school and when we finally got there I hurried to get out of the car and walked to the main office to get my schedule with Cecilia right behind me.
We got to the main office and waited in a ridiculously long line that was split into four for each class. I waited and waited and then I got my schedule and looked at it and was surprised to see I got the classes I wanted.
Me and Cecilia compared schedules. We only had math and English together, which to me was good because I didn’t have to listen to her over used ranting.
****LUNCHTIME
We were all sat at a table by the library during lunch. Cecilia and I on one side, and our friends Jamie and Beth on the other. They were together and have been since the summer of Freshman year. At first their parents were not supportive and didn’t accept them being together but they eventually got used to it.
I was caught up in a book while, yup, you guessed it, Cecilia was ranting about how she spent all summer at her aunt’s house up in Maine. I felt a tap on my shoulder and looked up, taking my attention off of my book.
I looked up and back at the stranger standing behind me and after looking at him for a second I realized…he was definitely no stranger to me.
In fact we used to be childhood friends, if you could even call it that. I moved into the house next to his at the beginning of first grade and his family was really nice and welcoming and I thought it would be fun to live there.
That was until he came outside. He walked over to me and before even saying hi or trying to get to know me he kicked me in the shin and ran inside, laughing at how funny he thought it was.
I thought and hoped that that would be the last time I would have to deal with him. Much to my luck, I got stuck going to the same school as him from first to seventh grade. During all that time, trust me, I received the upmost amount of insults and bruises.
He moved to Illinois that summer and I was happy. I thought that would be the last I would have to see him. Now…he’s back.
‘Colton?’ I said as I looked back at him and he smiled at me as if we were “cool”.
‘Hey, Shelby!’ he said excited about something.
‘Uh, hi?’
‘Hey, its been a while.’ he said as if I didn’t notice.
‘Yeah, three and a half years to be exact…’
‘We should catch up sometime…give me a tour of the school maybe?’
Just then Cecilia hit me in the arm and whispered ‘That’s him!’
I shook my head at her and explained that it was definitely not, and that she must have had the wrong guy..but she didn’t listen and said his "name".
'LUKE!' she shouted at him although he was two feet away.
His head snapped up from his phone and he looked straight at her.
‘Yeah?’ he said and that earned a skeptical look from me. I looked back and forth between him and Cecilia and then he looked at me and made an oh-yea-you-don’t-know face.
‘Uhmm…..’ I said confused to all parts of hell about what’s going on.
‘Here, let me explain. When I moved I wanted to start all over and when we got there I changed my name…well not legally but yeah. So I go by Luke now.’ He says as if it’s no big deal that he moved to a different state and changed his name.
‘Right…ok. Well if you don’t mind I would like to finish this lunch off without you here.’ I said looking at him ‘So if you would kindly leave us alone, that would be very much appreciated.’
He looked at me as a smirk played on his face. ‘Oh, what you don’t miss me?’
Cecilia looked at me and gave me the you-are-going-to-explain-later look and I nodded then looked back at Colt—Luke. ‘No not really I mean all throughout elementary school you were an ass to me and couldn’t care less…quite frankly I’m not sure why you decided to come over here and talk to me now.’
All he did was nod and turn away from me and as he was walking away he turned back and said ‘Oh, yeah, hey new neighbor!’ and with that he left our table.
