Remus John Lupin stood on platform 9 3/4 quite amazed at the bustling station crammed full of over excited first years and silently sulking teens. He had never expected to be given the opportunity to even be here, let alone attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, due to a certain furry little problem that rolled around once a month. Across the platform shouts could be heard from various parents wishing their children farewell and begging for letters home that half of the time would never be sent. A loud noise erupting from the front of the brilliantly red Hogwarts express brought him back to the present, and keeping his head down, Remus Lupin boarded the train, lugging an overly large trunk filled with his necessary supplies (and maybe a few dozen books) behind him. The train if it was possible, seemed louder that the platform, the students abandoning their polite facades and screeching reunions across the carriages at friends who they hadn't seen for a good six weeks (too long in the eyes of a teenager whose life revolved around meet-ups and messing around). Remus let out a nervous sigh and began to make his way down the carriage full of compartments which were, to his dismay, mostly full or scary looking older students with a multitude of friends already.

In the end he settled for a mostly empty compartment with only two other boys in it who, by the looks of things were also first years. The one on the left, clad in formal robes with an air of aristocracy about him was talking over-excitedly to a boy whose impossibly messy hair fell into the way of his glasses, perched precariously on his nose as if they were about to fall off, which no doubt they would if he continued to talk with the same amount of vigour about some game named Quidditch.  Remus, quite content to stay out of the discussion of  'which was more important: a chaser or a beater' settled in the corner of the compartment and pulled out a book which he promptly flipped open and began to read.

After about 5 minuets during which neither boy seemed to notice his presence, they both simultaneously turned their attention away from their discussion about Quidditch and turned to face him. The messy haired one, who five seconds ago had been exclaiming the importance of a chaser to the team, promptly opened his mouth and stated with a ridiculous amount of confidence "Hey, I'm James Potter and this, my friend, is the one and only Sirius Black" The darker haired boy let out a low chuckle, "Well thank you for that fabulous introduction James, but now I think it is time for you" he said, looking pointedly at me "to introduce yourself to us." Completely indifferent to their arrogance and in fact rather irritated at their sudden interest I answered simply "I am Remus Lupin and if you wouldn't mind I would rather like to get on with my book and leave you two to your simply fascinating conversation about chasers and beaters." Unable to resist the bite Remus found himself cringing at his already failed attempt to make friends, which he still had to remind himself would be a necessary requirement considering he would be attending this school for another 7 years. James however did not seem put out one bit exclaiming with feigned offence "How could you! Remus you've deeply wounded me and I've only known you for like, 10 seconds!" Letting a small smile creep its way onto his lips he found he was already growing fonder of the messy haired boy and replied quickly with a sharp "Actually if you hadn't noticed I've been here for a good 5 - 6 minuets most of those spent in peace without either of you two acknowledging my presence." This time it was the dark haired boy who replied with a smirk, "Well you see James here is simply convinced that Chasers are about 1 million times better that beaters which is quite obviously NOT true so I couldn't just leave him with false information now could I."

It was at that precise moment that a mousy haired young boy stumbled into their carriage, red faced and panting and exclaimed "Sorry, do you mind if I sit - you see everywhere else is full, and I couldn't find somewhere to sit - and err - I brought sweets - and I wondered if you'd want some?" Remus, liking the boy already gave him a small smile and made space for him on the bench where currently his legs were stretched out in front of him, book discarded, and announced: "This is James Potter" pointing at the brown eyed boy with glasses, who waved  halfheartedly at the boy, "and this is Sirius Black" poking a finger at the long haired one who promptly nodded to the one with big eyes "and I am Remus Lupin. Whats your name?" The boy quite overwhelmed by Remus' sudden show of boldness offered a squeaky "I'm Peter Pettigrew." He then sat down and offered with a small smile a box of Berty Bots Every Flavour Beans to accompany his introduction. The boys happily obliged and were soon in deep discussion of which Hogwarts house they fancied themselves to be a part of.  James ever the confident one exclaimed "I'm going to be in Gryffindor, my whole family has been in there and its clearly the best house!" At this Sirius cringed and in contrast with his usual dramatised way of addressing everything replied "Well, I'm not really sure what house I'm going to be in but my whole family has been in Slytherin and I guess I'm supposed to be like them, so I guess that's where I want to be." "Slytherin!?!" James exclaimed "Why on Earth would you want to be in Slytherin of all of the houses!" Remus, having read all about the rivalry between the houses decided that it would not be the best way to start a friendship and promptly reminded them that "It doesn't really matter what house you are in, and I personally wouldn't mind being in any of them, however I do see myself being sorted into Ravenclaw." Sirius gave him a small thankful smile and let out another chuckle as James, oblivious to Remus' true motives behind the comment proceeded with a "Oh because your soooo smart then?!" Remus smirked at James and turned his attention to Peter who answered "Well I suppose that I want to be sorted into Gryffindor - but I think that Hufflepuff might just end up with me at their table tonight." He cringed and Remus feeling sorry for the boy offered a reassuring smile to him and said warmly "Any house would be lucky to have you Pete." And with that the conversation moved on darting between the Quidditch teams and players to what subjects they thought they might take a fancy to at school. And with that began  a friendship between the boys which was only just beginning.
