Sirius, now clad in his new Hogwarts robes couldn't help but feel in awe of the great hall as he shuffled his way past tables crammed with students, all excited for the sorting and more importantly the great feast which took place shortly afterwards. James' obnoxious shouting was muffled by the enormity of the great hall, the illusion of the night sky increasing the grandeur, all the while making him feel small and insignificant compared with the scale of the school. Sirius and the other first years, led by a rather stern looking woman who introduced herself as Professor Minerva McGonagall, head of Gryffindor house, were lead to the front of the hall where they were to wait until sorted. Peter, who looked as if he was going to be sick with nerves turned to Sirius and opened his mouth as if to say something when interrupted by a loud voice which somehow seemed to fill every crack and crevice of the enormous room. "Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! May I start by saying what a pleasure it is to see so many new faces here tonight, I am your headmaster Albus Dumbledore and I can't wait to meet all of you in this coming year. And to all of you who have returned, welcome back. To all those who don't already know, a quick reminder to you all: stay away from the forbidden forest as it is strictly out of bounds. On a lighter note - may the sorting begin!"

The first years around Sirius seemed to buzz with energy, a mixture of nerves and muffled excitement - all eager to join the feast below and more importantly find out their family for the next 7 years. Sirius, however was dreading the sound of his name booming across the great hall. Remus seemed to notice his worry and whispered in his ear, "Don't worry about what house you are in. Remember the sorting hat always sorts you into the right house and I promise I'll stay friends with you wherever you are placed. It really doesn't matter to me."He offered Sirius a small smile at turned back to the on going sorting.  Sirius, wondering at how the boy seemed to read him so well tried to see the bright side but failed miserably, there was no way for him to win. If he was placed in Slytherin then he would be accepted by the generations of Blacks and saved from the terrifying wrath of his parents - but then, he would loose all hope of ever being friends with James, Peter and even Remus despite his promise. And well, if in the rare chance he was ever sorted into another house - he dreaded to think of what his parents would do... His train of thought was cut of sharply when a loud "Sirius Black!" echoed across the great hall. As Sirius made his way up to the sorting hat excited whispers from Slytherin table could be heard, all eager for their first new student to join them. Sirius, cringing at the unwanted attention, cautiously sat down and the sorting hat was placed onto his shoulder length dark hair.

'Hmm.....' the sorting hat mused, 'another Black I see, well I know just where to put you, Slytherin it must be...'  No! 'No? well then that's new....' He simply couldn't be placed in Slytherin, no, please no - well at least his parents would be happy..? but that wasn't really what he wanted. To be placed with those he hated so... 'Ah... this ones different I see, about time as well, intelligent I see, but impulsive no, Ravenclaws not for you... Loyal - to you friends at least -but sharp so Hufflepuff's not right. But the bravery - willing to defy your parents and face the consequences.... it must be'

"GRYFFINDOR!"

Sirius sat there stunned, not believing his ears - surely there must be some kind of mistake  - but then the hat was being removed, and he was being ushered down to the howling Gryffindor table, ecstatic with their latest member. And as he found himself sitting between two older Gryffindors grinning at him broadly, he felt himself smile - really he couldn't help it - it was contagious, and in the midst of his excitement he failed to notice the slack-jawed Slytherin's glaring at him from across the hall. If he had, he might have been concerned at the letter that was most likely being owled back to the Black family residence, and the reactions of his parents outraged that their eldest son, Sirius, could betray them in such a manner. Sirius, however, caught up in the rush of students around him and the continuing sorting of his fellow first years, didn't notice. He watched as the hat called student after student, placing them in all houses - cheers erupting from the lucky table each time. After a while Sirius became more concerned in the older Gryffindor's talk than the on going sorting, eager to learn all he could before his first day. That was until a booming voice thundered:

"REMUS LUPIN!"
