ASHLEY

We all crowded into the car and Mia turned the key. Nothing. The hoard of zombies ran at the car, throwing themselves against it like no tomorrow. The car wasn't moving, Mia screamed as the window behind her shattered.

"Fuck!" Steve exclaimed as he covered his head, glass flew across the car, cutting his arm twice.

"It's not moving!" Mia screamed.

I couldn't believe this, I felt like I was in Cujo, trapped in a car and waiting to be torn apart by a disease ridden creature. I squeezed my hands shut until they were white.

"Oh my god!" Mia cried out as the car vibrated with life. She floored it and peeled out of the gas station, running over atleast several of the zombies, we all screamed as dozens began pracrically throwing themselves at the car and banging their hands on the window before we finally managed to drive far from them.

"What the hell, what the hell?!" Mia exclaimed loudly as she repeatedly moved her gaze from in front of her to the driver's side mirror, until the horde was out of view.

I slumped back against the seat as I tried to catch my breath, I assumed both Steve and Mia were doing the same, although I was certain none of us were entirely relaxed. I heard Steve sharply inhale and I turned to see what was up, his right arm was bleeding as I noticed the glass from the shattered window scattered along the backseat.

"Shit, Steve.."

He looked up at me as I said that.

"How bad is it?" I asked.

"Not that bad, not deep enough for stitches, but if this gets infected, I'm screwed, and I'm not carrying any bandages."

I cursed under my breath and turned to Mia, who was looking infront of her as she steered through the occasional infected person.

"Mia, did you find any gauze or anything back at the other station?"

She stayed silent for a moment before speaking up, which broke the heavy silence that spread throughout the crammed car.

"No..everything was practically wiped clean besides a few bottles of water and other snacks.."

I reached behind me, feeling around and grabbing the strap to the backpack as I pulled it up to me, I unzipped it and searched around for some kind of bandage, I had rummaged around the bag, nothing. I pulled out one of my spares shirts, and turned my attention back to Steve.

"Give me your arm."

Steve held out his arm, and I wrapped the shirt around the wound, tying it into a tight knot. He winced in pain as it applied pressure to the cut, blood was already soaking through the shirt, but it had seemed to be less than when it was first cut. This would have to suffice.

"Sorry..I know it hurts, but it's all we have." I said with sincere empathy, I finally let go of his arm and he rested it in his lap, he let out an exhale, both of relief and pain.

"Can't believe we got out of that one alive." Mia piped up as she continued driving along the nearly desolate road, passing the occasional shadow of something once human, now something that can't even remember it's own name and it's only goal is to eat or kill any other living being. Made me sick thinking about it.

"Yeah. Might not get another chance to survive a giant hoard like that one. We have to keep moving, get Steve back to Cincinnati, and then you and I can figure something out."

"Well." Steve turned his head to face me, before he turned to Mia again.

"You two could always stick with me, I'm clearly trustable seeing as I haven't killed you guys yet and fed you to those things." He remarked with a small shrug.

"He's right, Ash. Besides, face it, we don't entirely stand a chance with no weapons, and Steve could be our best bet to making it through this whole pandemic alive."

As I watched trees pass the car window, and the occasional droplet of rainwater hit the car, I thought about it. She..wasn't wrong. I mean, we didn't have much, and Steve seemed more experienced in this range than me or Mia. And who knows who would happen to him if we simply left him alone somewhere in Cincinnati where he might not find what we was really looking for. At this point, I sort of..pitied him, I guess. I glanced at the two, they got along aswell, as an added plus.

"Alright, then. We'll stay, Steve."

He turned back to me again, giving another smile that seemed to completely change my previously cold demeanor. I pushed a strand of my hair from my face as I quickly turned away from him to face out of the window again.

"Nice. Three's a lucky number, after all." He laughed.

I rested my head on the backside of my seat, and closed my eyes, I yawned, might aswell get my rest before I can't. Everything was so surreal, it almost felt as if..as if this whole epidemic was just a nightmare. But it wasn't. This was real fucking life, I was living in it, it was real. It almost made me gain the urge to vomit, but I held it back as I calmed myself down, and eventually managed to get myself to sleep.

To tomorrow, and to our hopes of survival.
