"Wait a second, you're a lawyer? And you're opening up your own law firm?" Morgan asked her with a shocked expression on his face as he dug around the pile of puzzle pieces looking for the correct one.
Celeste nodded her head, "Yeah. My undergrad studies took two years instead of four because I was always taking classes. I graduated law school when I was 21, so two years ago."
Morgan reached for the last Timbit, "That's impressive. All I do is play hockey, but you're here correcting the justice system one case at a time."
Celeste rolled her eyes, "Oh, come on! You're so talented, I've seen you play before. Your team is dong great, you deserve to be captain. I'm doing what I love just like you're doing what you love."
"Thank you for that. What made you get into criminal law?" Morgan asked her. Her expression immediately shifted from happy to sorrowful.
"When I was 8, I was in the car with my dad and we got pulled over by a white cop. I don't hate cops or anything, by the way. I know there are amazing cops out there, but just like any job there are the corrupt ones, too. Anyways, he said my dad was speeding, which he was, but he was going 30 in a 25 zone which shouldn't be a reason to be pulled over. He asked my dad to step out of the car and he was yelling at him. My dad just kept saying 'My daughter is in the car. Please don't yell at me.' He physically pulled my dad out of the car and threw him on the ground. My dad tried getting up, but the cop arrested him instead. I've never seen my dad cry that much. He pulled out my dad's wallet as my dad was struggling to get free, and with my own 2 god damn eyes, I saw him put a pack of cocaine in his wallet. How was my 8 year old self supposed to know that it was cocaine? They arrested him for possession of drugs and he served for 2 years. That's why I want to become a lawyer, so I can help people like my father and families like mine."
At this point, Morgan wasn't trying to figure out the puzzle. Instead, he was focused on every word that left Celeste's mouth. She wasn't looking up at him when telling the story, and Morgan knew that even though all those years had passed, that was something she would never get over.
"I don't know what to say. I guess I'm just glad that you're gonna be working to help save the many innocent people who go to jail. Especially the ones of color who are treated harshly." Morgan slowly told her, trying to now hit a nerve.
She looked up from the puzzle and smiled at him, "Thanks, Morgan."
He smiled back at her, then the two of them focused on completing the puzzle. They spend hours talking about their future plans, debating over what type of food is better, and learning small details about each other that no one else knows.
