A shadow fell over the daisy chain in the girls hands and she looked up to see a boy smiling down at her. He sat down onto the grass beside her and she stared at him with confusion. Her mum told her not to talk to strangers so she was ready to ignore him, but he piped up.

"My dad and your mum are the last ones here and all of my friends are gone." he said. She saw he had dark hair like her mother and that he was missing one of his top teeth.

"My mummy told me not to talk to strangers." she told him, still staring.

"I think my dad told me it was only for big old smelly people. Not little boys like me." he giggled.

He pulled out a gummy worm and she watched as he stretched it till it snapped it in half, then held out one of the pieces to the girl. She gave him a grin as she chewed it, they were her favourite.

"There, now we're officially not strangers." the boy grinned.

"I don't have anything to give you though." she told him, checking her pockets. The three daisy chains next to her caught her eye.

"You can have one of these. I made them." she said proudly, offering one to him.

"Those are for girls." he poked his tongue out at it.

"No they aren't."

"Yes they are!"

"But these are friendship bracelets, they'll make us friends."

The boy seemed to think about it for a little while before he reached over, carefully slipping it onto his wrist.

"Like this?" he asked. She nodded and flashed a grin.

"So friends forever?"

"Forever."
