FOUR

     After school, Emily and Steve lounged on her bed, talking about random things, both trying to keep the other's mind off of what bothered them. It seemed they'd talked about everything that they could, which only left their burning questions to be asked.

"Steve?" Emily addressed him timidly, looking down at her hands in her lap.

"Yeah, Em?" He looked her in the eyes.

"I don't want to intrude, or anything, but if you don't mind my asking, what do you think is going to happen with you and Nancy?" She still didn't meet his eyes.

"Honestly, I really can't tell you." He sighed deeply. "Em?"

"Hm?"

"What was that this morning, between you and Hargrove?"

"Who?"

"That guy who sat next to you, what was his deal?" He pulled her hand away from her gaze so that she would look at him, just as the boy in question had done that very same morning. When Steve did it, though, she didn't mind, and allowed it to happen.

"Last night at the party, he bumped into me, and was kind of an ass about it, but then when he saw me, his whole demeanor changed, and he wanted to take me home. To keep this short, I put him in his place, and then he came up to me again this morning, trying to get my attention." Emily was slightly irritated at the thought of the attractive boy who remained in the back of her mind the whole day.

"Em, honestly, I don't mean to be an ass, but I would've done the same thing. What you did last night showed him that you can be confident, and a lot of guys are into that. Hell, that's one of the reasons I've liked you for so long." Steve didn't mean to let the last part slip, but he wasn't too sure that he regretted it.

"What?" She cocked her eyebrow, sitting up straight. "You've liked me?"

"Well, yeah, so has every guy in our school," He said to her as if she should've known. "I couldn't help that I was one of those guys."

"Steve, I-"

"Please, don't say anything, just leave it."

Emily shook her head and leaned over him, kissing him lightly, and then pulling away with a set of pink cheeks.

Steve was slightly shocked, but once he realized what had happened, nothing stopped him from leaning over her and doing the exact same thing, longer and more passionately.
