Ah Christmas,the time where you celebrate....Is it Jesus or Santa Claus again?Or is it just some other time where you get your holidays from nowhere and just shop like crazy because I dunno,everybody's been doing it thanks to capitalists encouraging to do so?
The above picture is taken in Mid November where its a month away until Christmas.I instantly thought to myself,"Is it Christmas already?"Being the bumbling idiot that I am,I have to take out my phone and realize that it's still November.After this 'discovery',I had many questions in my mind.Why are they doing this so early?Is the true meaning of Christmas truly dead?
I concluded that is because there is a tradition of giving out presents and many capitalists see this as an opportunity to suck the money out of everyone and give out 'generous' discounts.This encouraged the people to buy more and see Christmas as a festival of buying and giving out presents and nothing more.I guess that is the reason why I always hear people restating that the festival is to celebrate the birth of Jesus in Christmas Worships.
'Still,could be worse' is what I always said to myself and apparently it worked on here too. Chinese Singles' Day is a festival which has a relatively short history.The festival is so commercialized that the first impact I had on the festival is the immense amount of people going shopping for whatever reason.This is thanks to the Chinese capitalists successfully commercializing the festival that the purpose of the festival was changed from celebrating the existence of single people into some other shopping festival.At least Christmas had people caring about the original meaning. Chinese Singles' Day was not so lucky,people seemed to be accepting about this change of meaning and the chances that reviving the original meaning to its former glory seemed bleak.
Chinese Singles' Day is a good example that capitalists can change anything including festivals to create a situation in favour of them. To preserve the meaning of soon-to-be commercialized festivals like Christmas. It looks like we need to stand up for it and don't let the original meaning die out.
