(This is a modern AU, they are royalty in some made up country called Misthaven. So they aren't fairy tale characters and there is no magic.)

"Daddy, come on we need to get there already!" The little girl was practically bouncing out of her seat in their fancy long town car. "We said we'd be there an hour ago, he's going to be smug." She pouts while looking excited at the same time, it was confusing being five years old.

"Emma, I know we are late but we got distracted in the stables with swan and charm's training." when he looks at Emma he can't help but smile every time, she is his light, his little angel and the only person who could make pouting look so adorable.

The let her head fall slightly causing her blonde curls to fall all over her face, she gets annoyed the moment it does and pushes it out of her face. "I know daddy, I'm sorry. I just can't wait to see Killy, it's been months."

"And see him you shall, we are almost there." He rubs her back and she crawls towards him to sit in his lap, which he happily accepts. Emma was everyone in their kingdoms favorite, all their subjects love her and protect her and they have never needed to shelter her from their kingdom. Emma is allowed to go out on outings around town with a guard or her family, she is able to go play outside and explore as long as she has someone with her.

Today, this moment, he would probably wish that they were more protective and that they had more security. No one has ever tried to do anything to harm the royal family since Regina Mills found love and Mary-Margaret apologized sincerely for messing up when she was younger. Now Regina is like an aunt to Emma, she loves the spunky blonde to death and would do anything to protect her.

There is a bump and it shakes the whole car, it's like the driver lost control. David's first instinct, like any good father, was to make sure that Emma was safe. He held her close as the car swerved, Emma was gasping and shouting for her dad in fear of what was happening. Next thing they knew there was a loud crash and David flew onto the floor of the car with his daughter holding tightly to him.

"Daddy who's shouting?" Emma said into her father's neck as she was shaking with nerves.

He finally heard what she was talking about, barely audible because of all the sounds from the crash he hear a few words.

"Where is she?"

                                     "The princess!"

                                                                             "You can't protect her!"

There was a gun shot and Emma jumped and tightened her arms around her dad's neck, she felt safe as long as she had him. Her father was frozen for about two minutes after hearing that the person yelling is after his daughter, then he moved into action. His daughter in his arms he went to the door then stopped, that was the side he's pretty sure the people's voices were coming from. He turns and goes out the opposite side, not looking first and just running in any direction away from the scene with the men trying to get his daughter. There was a gun shot, but the adrenaline throughout his body didn't let him realize right away that it hit him. He was bleeding and he felt it dripping down his body which is the only reason he actually knew he was shot. His eyes land on an alley not too far ahead and he starts to stumble in the direction, knowing that he was starting to loose too much blood. David hits the wall, so close to the hidden alley and Emma cries out because she doesn't know what's happening. Partly David is happy she doesn't understand and that she's just scared because of the loud noises and shouting-that's what a five year old gets out of a kidnapping. Knowing he's struggling with staying up and most likely will lose consciousness soon he tells his daughter to do the first thing he can think of that she would know how to do. She would know how to call the police but she wouldn't know how to explain it to them, she would shut down. What she needed to do was to talk to someone that she knows well, someone she trusts and that she won't panic and run away because she feels like she is disappointing them. "Call mommy Em, keep her on the phone," he hands her the phone and she cries but she starts to use his cell to find her number.
