I had almost went the entire day without talking to anyone. Almost. I was walking out of my classroom getting ready to leave, when I got tackled to the ground.
My books went flying, and I ended up with a weight on my body. I realized someone was lying on top of me. I made a disgruntled noise, and looked up into dazzling ice blue eyes. They were gorgeous. I had always been a sucker for the eyes.
"Uh, I'm sorry." said the stranger.
Was that a country accent I heard? Yes, I realize I was in Tennessee, but no one I had heard today had had a country accent.
"It's fine." I muttered back.
I tried to get up, but he wouldn't move.
"Are you going to get up or stay here?" I asked him.
He blushed, "Yeah, sorry again." he said while getting off of me.
I sat up. My eyes automatically went black. The world was spinning. I hated being dizzy from sitting up too fast. I grabbed my head.
"Woah, are you okay?" he asked me.
I just nodded.
After the dizziness faded, I stood up and collected the books that the boy hadn't already gathered.
"Thanks.: I told hom after he handed me my books.
I turned and kept walking towards the doors to leave school.
"Wait," he said as I grabbed the door handle, "What's your name?"
I looked at him, hoping he would walk away if I didn't answer him. No such luck.
I sighed.
"Samantha." I told him, then walked through the doors and out of the school.
As I opened my car door, I realized I had dropped my necklace. Tears dotted my eyes. Everything I stood for in California was completely different from what I would stand for here. The necklace was the only connection I still had to California.
My necklace was from my best friend Amanda. She had worn it everyday for as long as I'd known her. I had never seen her without it. She had gotten sick and was rushed to the hospital where she found out she had cancer. I had been with her through the entire fight. The last breath she had took, she took with me holding her hand and handing me her necklace.
As much as I didn't want to go back to face the stranger, my necklace was more important to me than my pride. I started running towards the school with tears in my eyes.
When I got to the door, he was coming out of it.
"Hey, glad I found you again. Hey, why are you crying?" he asked me.
I tried to stop crying as I answered him, "I lost my necklace in the school. Uh, have you seen it?"
He smiled, "Yeah I've seen it.", he told me while holding up something in his hand.
It was my necklace.
"Oh my gosh! Thank God! You found it." I told him while taking the necklace from him.
"You are welcome Samantha. Very Welcome." he said smiling like it was an inside joke to himself.
"What are you smiling about?" I asked him.
"You are thanking a complete stranger for finding a necklace. Most girls here would take it and leave." he told me while still smiling.
"Well there's nothing wrong with being nice." I told him.
He smiled at me. I sighed.
"What's your name?" I asked him even though I didn't want to.
He smiled again.
"Okay, are you not going to tell me, or do you just really like smiling?" I asked him.
"Well I do like smiling, but I rarely have a reason to. And my name is Bill." he told me.
I looked at him for a moment before he started laughing.
"I'm kidding. My name is Lucas, but I prefer to go by Luca." he informed me.
"What? Too good for the "s"?" I asked him jokingly.
"You know what, I think I like you." he said.
I looked at him quizzically.
"That's not what I meant. I meant you're actually pretty cool. You know, for someone that hasn't spoken a word to anyone today." he clarified for me.
"I spoke to you didn't I? Plus, I spoke to the teachers so." I shot back.
"I meant to the important people. You'll find out that I'm not exactly the most liked person here. I mean, I am the true country boy, while everyone else here acts like they live in California." he said with utter disgust.
"I'm from California." I mumbled hoping not to make him even more disgusted.
I saw the look of disgust be replaced with embarrassment on his face as he realized what I had said.
"I'm sorry." he told me apologetically.
"It's fine. Just give me your number and we'll call it even." I told him.
I blushed realizing how that probably sounded.
"I didn't mean it like that." I said quickly.
"Oh no, no, no, I know you didn't!" Luca said dismissively.
"Okay, well, I'm gonna go now. Bye Luca." I told him waking back towards my car.
"Right. Bye Samantha." Luca said walking towards the road.
I know it was rude to not ask him if he needed a ride, but I had just met him today. As if I wasn't awkward enough by myself, which had clearly shone through today with Luca, but it was worse around other people. I think I could spare myself an awkward car ride.
