Remember last year when you told me
To always stay here and never leave me

Two kings culled by fate, strung up by destiny, and caged by each other. One, with eyes that always shone like the sun, who keep his eyes on the horizon waiting for the other. Years passed, without signs of any colours. Slowly he found himself lost in the motions.

The light from your eyes made it feel like
We were dancing in the moonlight

He was nearly twenty when he had the largest gala in his life, made only to find his heart. It didn't work. He continued to host as many as possible for the next year for his life. They got smaller and smaller as time passed. Nearing his twenty first birthday another suitor appeared, asking him to dance. The man's clothing was quite casual for the gala, but something about him sparkled. He swept the king off his feet. For once the king felt awake, watching the stranger pull him around the dance floor, but it was cut short. The man disappeared, like a dream melting in the morning sun.

Remember last year when you told me
That these will be lifelong stories

The other, full of ambition and high hopes, left his home young. Not to find love but to find himself. He fought his family's wishes, defying his fate. He ran to the next kingdom over. The trip alone took him a year. He found many a kind family willing to help him without knowing his identity, a complete opposite of his home, full of greedy men and seductive women. He stayed for many years, finding his most trusted friends at one of the kings galas, and lovely partner too. But as much as he loved her, the nights were cold and lonely. One day, around his twenty first birthday he decided to go back to that gala. In the centre of the room stood a man covered in rich finery.

The light from your eyes made it feel like
We, we're dancing in the moonlight

Their eyes caught and the man felt his world burn. The king that stood in front of him had deep rings under his eyes, hair flying in all the wrong directions, and hands trembling with sadness. The man knew he had to help the king, so he strode up to him. He saw a life of loneliness as he took his hand and familiar fleeting hope. Their dance was passionate and full of emotion, but a feeling of horror filled his being, as he caught the eyes of his lovers. Tears were pooling in her eyes, and he had to rip himself out of the kings arms. He left to console his love, but he promised the king he would return. He didn't see his world turning monotonous as he left.

You were dancing in the moonlight

His lover left him soon after. So did his father. He returned to his kingdom on the call of responsibility. Years flashed by as he worked to fix his kingdom, helping the the suffering, protecting the innocent, and eradicating the corrupt. Soon his kingdom was a pinnacle of perfection, but the king was still lonely. He decided to leave his kingdom with his friend, before traveling to the neighbouring kingdom, to fulfill his promise.

And I was dancing in the moonlight

But the king was dead. Killed by an empty heart. The man took to the grave, and found it was painted in the most beautiful colours.

Or

He arrived, but was told the other had abandoned the throne. The king searched for months, before collapsing at the gates of his kingdom. Here he saw the other. Colours swirled off him. He stopped when he saw the king. He held his hand to his heart, and ran to him. They cried together before a kiss they both deserved
