Picture this: It was New Year's Eve. Everyone is out drinking and partying. I guess that includes me. Normally, I wouldn't go to these things, I would just stay at home with dad and watch it all happen on tv. I was perfectly fine with that, but Ray wasn't.
"Why am I here Ray?" I moan for the one-hundredth time. He bends down to make it so we're eye to eye. Yes I'm short, 4'9 to be exact.
"Because you're my girlfriend, and because I love you." He gives me a kiss on my forehead (even though he knows I hate it).
"I told you to stop doing that." I whine like a two year old.
"And I told you I can't help it. You're just so cute! You're my little munchkin."
"And you're my beanstalk." He stops dead in his tracks when I call out the nickname that he hates.
"Okay, okay. How about we go in that house until the countdown is over. Then we can do anything you want."
"Can we go to the hill top?" I ask skeptically.
"Yes."
"Fine, take me away!" I exclaim dramatically, letting him drag me through the front door knowing my own two feet wouldn't take me.
"Ray! Ray! Over here man!" Oh God, kill me now! Please? Ray's delinquent friends were calling him over, probably not even realising my existence because of all the people.
"Come on Melody. The countdown isn't for long. I know you hate them but they're my friends, please? Pretty please with a cherry on top?" He was giving me his puppy eyes. It was a look I couldn't resist.
"You know that look gets me every time. It's not fair!" I giggle.
"Is that a yes?" Again with the puppy eyes!
"Only if you stop doing that with your face!" He laughed with me this time. He gave my hand a little squeeze as he led me to his friends.
"No way! You actually got Melody Papillon to come to a party!" I sigh at the sound of Ray's best friend Parker. He can be alright sometimes but when he's with his group of friends, he turns into a real douche bag.
"No way, Parker is at another party? Found any other girls to annoy?" Parker, as well as his other friends, is a real player. Sometimes I really wonder why Ray is friends with these guys, he's just so, different.
"Alright, alright break it up you two. Let's not have another argument." Ray at some point always has to step in. He knows I don't like his friends. It's not that I don't want to like them, it's just that it's next to physically impossible to.
"10 minutes till the countdown?" A random guy shouts from the other side of the room. I mentally thank god for letting us get here so late.
"Anyway, where you been mate? The party has been raging since 10! You missed Jordan finally talking to Emily." Jordan was one of the shy guys of the group. He was actually alright, I guess. I never really talked to him though.
"No way! He's had a crush on her for nearly 3 years! How come he actually spoke to her?" Jordan was standing a bit behind Parker but he pushed through to talk.
"One word mate, alcohol!" I could now tell that he was drunk. Even from where I'm standing I could smell alcohol in his breath. He looked behind Ray and made direct eye contact with me. The way he was looking at me was kind of uncomfortable.
"Hey Melody. Fancy seeing you here." He tried to get a bit closer to me but I think Ray thought that was close enough. Thank god. He held him up and nudged him back a bit.
"I think that you've had enough to drink mate." He passed Jordan to Parker. "We're gonna go and get a drink, see you guys later."
When we were walking off towards drinks table I felt Ray looking at me. "I'm sorry." He looked sad. "Sorry that my friends are idiots." This man is so sweet.
"Ray! Stop right there, you don't have any choice over how your friends act. I can't hold you responsible for their actions." I chuckle at how cute he's being.
"You know, you really get me." He bent down and game me a kiss.
"I know. I'm an amazing girlfriend." Giving him a cocky grin.
"That you are."
"10, 9, 8," finally the countdown has begun. Ray held my hand as we joined in with the countdown. "7,6,5,4,3,2,1! Happy Ne-" Ray instantly kissed me, making me laugh a little at his eagerness. When we finally broke apart for air he whispered in my ear "Happy new year."
"Happy new year to you too." I whisper out of breath.
"Come on let's get out of here. Still wanna go to the hill top?" He raised his eyebrow suggestively.
"Of course I do!" We weaved in and out of the mounds of people (who were somehow still making out! I mean Jesus! Don't they need to breath?) until we finally made it to the front door.
"Ladies first." Ray gestured, holding the door open for me.
"How very chivalrous of you." Hand in hand we walked in a comfortable silence to Ray's car. When we got inside the chairs were freezing. Ray told me to wear this stupid dress but now I'm just cold. The first thing I did when we sat down was turn on the heated seats. Who ever invented them is a life saver. Scotland is just so cold, especially in the winter, and being that there's snow everywhere you look just makes it worse.
"You know I don't think I've ever left a party so soon."
"We could've stayed if you really wanted to." He was starting to make me feel guilty.
"Well I knew you were uncomfortable there, and when you're uncomfortable I'm uncomfortable." Ray always says stuff like this. It's so cute but for some reason it just doesn't feel, right.
"Aw how sweet." I smile at him. The roads were so dark, and the parts that you could see were covered in snow. "Be careful, it's New Year's Eve you don't know what kind of drivers are out tonight."
"You worry too much." He chuckled, slightly easing my paranoia. Ray reached for the button that turns on the radio and surprisingly my favourite song came on, Killer Queen!
"I love this song, turn it up!"
"As you wish!" Ray turned up the volume up so high that I couldn't even hear myself sing.
"Extraordinarily nice, she's a killer Queeeeeeeen!" I scream from the top of my lungs and Ray joins in. For that one second I felt so happy, I felt so alive.
"Gunpowder, gelatine! Dynamite with a-"Beep! Beep! The car swung from left to ride on the ice roads as a truck came swerving towards us. There was nothing I could do except watch it all happen in slow motion.
"I love y-"
Crash!
Everything went dark as the world faded around me._____________________
