I tossed and turned all through the dark hours of the night. My memories of Darrel had floated into my nightmares, but the main thing that concerned me were the flashes of Anna. It was like being a ghost, watching my own death.
I could see her in the same plastic covered chair that I had been in. She was terrified; sweat plastered the blond bangs to her forehead as she shook slightly in the seat. I could see him as he got closer to her. Anna whimpered so quietly that I thought I had imagined it at first. I knew that Wesley was talking, but I couldn't hear a word of it. There was only Anna. In a quick movement, he crossed the room to her. I watched in horror as he descended upon the poor helpless girl in the chair. She let out a strangled scream as his fangs sank into her throat.
I woke up with a cry, hand pressed over my mouth. I was sitting up in the bed, the sheets covered in sweat. Using the blanket on my lap, I wiped the moisture from my own skin, ignoring the dull throb in my head.
When the fogginess in my mind lessened, I pushed aside the covers and tried to stand up, failing the first time. I was still very weak, but if I held onto something, I could manage.
My hands found the metal knob of the bedpost and I pushed off of it, gaining my footing slowly. When I finally found the small mirror, I almost gagged at the sight of myself. Just one session with Wesley had left me pale white like paper. There were small dark bags around my eyes that showed fatigue, and my flannel was stained with dried blood from the bite. The spot on my hand where I had felt the pain at the airport was bruised and had turned a sickly purple color.
Disgusted at my form, I pulled the mirror off the wall and did something that I never would have thought of: I smashed it against the ground.
Impact of the cement easily caused the glass to shatter, making a loud crashing sound. I could hear footsteps coming from down the hall and I quickly kneeled down, collecting a shard. It sliced my palm and I swore under my breath at the pain and then stood back up just as the door burst open, giving me barely enough time to slide the glass up my sleeve.
Turning around, I wanted to smile at the look on James' face, but I held myself back. "I- I don't know what happened. It just kind of fell off the wall." I stammered with a quiet voice. His expression switched to annoyed and he scratched his head of ash colored hair and then stared at me for a moment before he moved again. I couldn't help but be a little pleased with myself.
"Just... Come on." He motioned for me to join him, and I did, as he stepped out into the hallway. No doubt we would be finding me a new room. One with no glass. This was my last chance, it had to happen now.
We had taken a few steps down the hallway when I spun around, slipping the sharp object from my right sleeve. He hardly had time to react before I drove the point into his lower arm, causing it to spew blood in a steady stream of crimson. I could clearly smell the blood as it created a small pool on the floor, and I was willing to bet that the dozen or so vampires that were here would catch the whiff.
I was right; not a minute later, I was being harshly pushed out of the way by a black haired vampire. As he looked back at me face, fangs out, his eyes shone a deep red color. I backed up slowly and then turned around to run as more figures filled the hallway.
I made it a good distance down the opposite direction before I had to stop to catch my breath. I was still weak, and the leaking cut on my hand had not helped by spreading blood everywhere, but my legs had taken me out of the 'feeding zone', and that was as far as they would go. "Come on, just a little bit further." I spoke quietly to myself as I moved slowly down the hall. Even if the blood-suckers were preoccupied, that still left the humans-other than James-to fight.
As I turned the corner, I came face to face with a big bulky figure that towered over me. I looked up to see Malik staring down at me. Not careful enough, I thought to myself as he stepped forward. A set of icy hands clasped down on my shoulders and spun me around.
Looking down at me was Julian, blood dripping from his chin.
