I stepped off of the airplane, my black duffel bag in hand, and slipped the sunglasses over my blue eyes. I had on a pair of dark blue jeans and a flannel so that I didn't stand out all that much in the crowd of Californian tourists as we all moved away from the tarmac together. My smaller size had come in handy often, as it was now, and I was able to successfully maneuver through the people.
In my rush to get out, I ran straight into someone. The strap of the bag slipped off of my shoulder and hit the ground with a small thud. The man swore as he bent down to pick up his own luggage. Crouching down, I grabbed at the strap and gathered myself.
"Shit, I'm really sorry. I should really pay attention to where I'm going." He spoke up first, his voice coming out similar to that of the rest: tourist. He must have been on a different flight, because I hadn't seen him on the plane at all. His hazel eyes met mine and my mind wandered for a moment before I caught up and returned his friendly smile. "My name is James." He introduced himself, hand out.
I shook it casually. "I'm Katherine." I said curtly. The sooner I got out of this airport, the sooner I could get started on my real mission. My hand tried to pull back, but he had grasped it tightly. There was a sudden pain in my hand, but it dissipated as fast as it had come. I decided not to bring it up in case it was a muscle spasm or something that might be offensive to him. I stared down at our hands and blinked. "If you don't mind, I'd like my hand back please." Looking back up to him, he smiled and released, letting my right hand fall to the side, slightly hovering over my suitcase.
Just then, a cell phone rang from one of his pockets. "If you'll excuse me for a moment, I must take this." I gave him a nod and he put it up to his ear, beginning to walk away. His voice lowered, but I caught some of his words. "Yes, I'm here. I'll be home soon." Not quite understanding what he meant, I shook my head softly and left the airport, putting the shades back on to keep out the sun.
I glanced at the time on my watch and swore under my breath. I was officially late.
