Damon's POV
"Samantha isn't dead! Stop talking. STOP SAYING THAT!" I screamed.
The looks of pity and sorrow followed me as I hauled my half drunk body to her coffin.
"Let's get you home, brother." Stefan said, skeptically.
I shook my head at him and pushed at the hands that grabbed me. She isn't dead. She can't be.
Samantha's parents sat on the front row, both of them bawling since she was brought to the church for a final goodbye.
I still couldn't fathom her death. I didn't believe it, I couldn't believe it and I flat out refuse to believe my true love is gone.
My mind wasn't functioning properly. I was sad, angry, depressed, lost without her. I blamed myself because I know I hurt her but she didn't deserve it. She deserved an explanation before I left for Lucifer's house. I needed her to trust me, but she never lived to know that his wife is an old friend of mine, a friend that I was helping to get out of an abusive marriage.
A friend that Lucifer mistreated often.
And now, my baby was sleeping in a white box. She looked pretty in her attire but if she was awake, she would've looked 10× better. I need her to get up.
"Get up Sam, these people thinks you're dead. Open your eyes and prove them wrong." I whispered, in her ears. My fingers skimmed her jawline and I cringed. Her body was stiff.
The pastor stopped his speech and give me a look. I stared back at him.
"Can I say something about my girlfriend?" I asked.
Stefan stood behind me, the pastor looked at her parents for approval and Christine nodded.
I walked quickly towards the podium. Smiling at everyone before I grabbed the mic and made my way back to Sam. I turned to look at her, the mic to my lips.
"Here lies Samantha Foster, the love of my life and my soulmate for eternity. My human pride and joy........look baby, these people came to see you, you have to wake up." I started, my voice cracking in the end.
I could hear everyone's whisper of concern and some saying I was crazy, delusional but I didn't care. I didn't want to care.
She wasn't waking up. Her heart wasn't beating. That's when I accepted the fact that she's gone. Her heart stopped beating.
Giving up, I gave Stefan the mic, kissed Samantha on her head, hand, and cheek and I walked out.
Stefan POV.
After apologizing to the church and the pastor for Damon's behavior, the church ceremony went on.
It was two days after Sam's death and her parents decided to bury her. I took care of everything while they mourn. I had to be strong for Sam.
I knew Damon would've blamed himself the second he found out but there wasn't anything I could've done to stop him. I tried convincing him but he always talked me out of it. He blamed himself for Sam's death and I couldn't convince him otherwise.
He's been on edge, distant, moody and sad. He would drink more alcohol than blood. That was the punishment he turned to. It wasn't helping one bit but that's what he wanted.
Christine hasn't been herself. She basically turned her humanity off the second she found her dead daughter but she wasn't cruel like expected. No, she was not.
Dimitri was a wreck. He was the worst of all. He refused to eat and sleep. He would look over Sam's old photos and sit in her room for hours. I've never seen something like that before. And I never wanted to again. He, of course, blames Damon for his daughter's death.
Hell, I would've too.
....
After Samantha's funeral, everyone departed and I stayed back. Only because I saw Damon visit her grave after everyone left.
I stood a distance away and listened in.
"Its my fault. I'm so sorry." he started, crouching down.
He raked his fingers over the cobblestone.
"If I had only explained, you would've been here, alive and well. I would've proposed on your birthday next month.......we would've been happy."
"I can't live with myself. I can't feel this way....I don't want to. I'm sorry baby. I'm so freaking sorry!"
"I have to turn it off. Its the only way I can live with myself." he whispered softly.
Leaning forward, Damon gently brushed his lips on her headstone. He closed his eyes and opened them back a few seconds after. Detaching his lips from the headstone, he straightened his spine.
"Goodbye my love. Forgive me." he said, then disappeared.
Coming out of my spot, I walked to Sam's headstone.
I had no words but the promise I made..
"I'll protect him with my life, that's the last thing you made me promise you." I smiled sadly, remembering the stern look she faked when she told me this.
With one final goodbye, I left.
Because now, I had to look for my brother and get him to turn back on his humanity.
That's what Samantha would've wanted.
And I had to stay true to my promise.
To save my brother.
