The yells and cries of the child and everyone else had faded al little before I gathered my thoughts on how to convince Alec to leave me. It would be hard to do, but it wasn't impossible. I could do it.

He was being eerily quiet while we were driving . That only happened when he was thinking deeply. What was he thinking about? Doesn't matter. I need to convince him.

"Alec?"

"Yeah?" his voice was so quiet it was almost a whisper. Whatever he was thinking about must've been important. Maybe now isn't the time to ask. A loud scream rang in my ears. It sounded like a little kid screaming for his mom. More yelling was heard, quieter than the scream. Me and Alec unintentionally flinched when we heard it. It made me wonder what happened to him. A person's story tells everything about them, it tells how strong they are, it tells their beliefs. Here I am thinking I know everything about him. Everything but his story. Backgrounds are important. What was his? Maybe someday I'll know, maybe I won't.

"I need to ask a favor of you."

"Yeah?"

"I need you to catch up to Casey and Vincent. Leave me behind," he looked at me, I could tell by the look on his face that he was going to say no, but I kept talking anyway, "you are the only one that can and I don't want Casey and Vincent to get hurt because I wasn't there to protect them and if they do it would be all my fault. I won't be able to go fast enough because of this wound and you would be able to-"

"No."

"But-"

"Dawn, I'm not leaving you with your leg like this."

"It would benefit me. If you didn't go to them, I would be pushing myself to move faster. It would make my wound worse. This way I can take my time and rest."

"But what if officers find you? What happens then? You are in no condition to be fighting!" We were both yelling now.

"But what if that happens to them? They don't even know how to fight! They are defenseless and if they get caught I-" my voice cracked and I quieted. I wouldn't be able to convince him. He worries for me too much. "Forget it. Let's just go."

Alec's face relaxed and he wasn't yelling anymore. He looked guilty and I could tell he was trying to find a compromise. "How about this," he spoke softly, "the next safe house we see we stop there. You stay there and rest, I'll go to get Casey and Vincent, then come back for you. As long as you stay at the house."

"Alright fine." There was no way I'd be staying at the house.

The next safe house wasn't too far away. The pain in my leg had become a dull throb. I almost couldn't feel it anymore. Nonetheless, the doctors gave me pain meds and bandaged the wound. Alec hadn't left yet, he was busy telling someone about our situation and how I should stay here and that he will be back in a few days. Then, all of a sudden, I heard Alec yelling at someone, then someone yelling back. I can't even leave him alone for ten seconds without him getting into trouble. The pain meds the doctor used mad my leg numb, so I couldn't walk on it to go see what's going on. I could only wait for Alec to come back.

Soon, loud footsteps came down the short hallway to my door. Alec walked in with a mad expression on his face. "What's wrong? Who were you arguing with?" I questioned as soon as he came into the room.

"We are leaving as soon as you can walk." He ignored my question and pretended he didn't hear me.

"What? Why? What's going on? What about Casey and Vincent? You'll lose time and I wouldn't be able to have time to heal. Plus, this is the last safe house before the next sector, and you know how hard it is to find a safe house in a sector." I was talking fast, rambling on without thinking of what I was saying. I was starting to get worried. Things had finally been good, sort of, and Casey and Vincent would've been safe with Alec, then Alec says we are both leaving. And why? Because he got into an argument with someone? That's a stupid reason to leave. Does he think I won't be able to protect myself ? Who was he arguing with? Alec turned around and went to leave the room without saying anything.
