I have lived here my whole life, just like the generations before me. Even though there isn't much here, I'm very much glad to call this little coastal town my home. It is a rather closed of community. Sound from the outside world don't reach us, for they are drowned out by the roaring of the waves and the cries of seagulls. Yet, despite the isolation, you never feel truly alone if you don't want to be. When the moon is high, and the night at its darkest, a warm light is there to safeguard the weary souls to their haven.
The lighthouse.
In all my years, I have never seen a single soul enter or leave, yet I know for certain there is at least one being that dwells within its walls.
Legend has it she is a lady of the sea. In her possession: a silky seal coat to grant her protection from the freezing waves and harsh wind. She is a daughter of the salty water and full moon, yet, she is no longer the master of her domain. The waters have become infested with something dark. Creatures that lurk from the sharp rocks and sing their haunting tune to lead sailors to their misery.
Sirens.
By now, it had become a plague. No one talked about them aloud, but we all knew it. Ever since the lighthouse keeper left the sea, the water has become treacherous and foul. It makes you wonder why the keeper left her world in the first place.
What if I told you it was because of a girl. A little one that washed up on the shore one day, probably the unfortunate victim of a shipwreck. She was taken in by the selkie, and cared for as one of her own. But the more she gravitated towards the little girl, the more she turned away from the sea. Other sea feary folk saw an opportunity, and the rest is history.
I have hear tell by others, that they saw the selkie with their own eyes. Apparently, when the moon is highest, you can find her staring at the water if you're lucky. I've heard tell that she looked lonely, very lonely indeed. Longing for the sea, but not able to return to what she once held so dearly, for that would mean leaving behind her new companion.
I have seen her, the little one. she comes into town regularly. The people acknowledge her, but no one questions her. It's like an unspoken rule. She's a real tiny one. wouldn't last a day on her own. I doubt anyone in town would dare to give her shelter, out of fear of being cursed. She doesn't belong to this world after all. Not anymore.
Apparently, there is a choice to make. Go back to how things once were and leave the girl, or embrace the new, and give up on the sea. A tough choice, yes, but with the right state of mind, a bearable one.
Sometimes, it might be good to let go of how things once were and find a new adventure. It might be inconvenient for now, but we will adapt, and we will thrive. The sea cannot tame us, just as we can't tame her. There will be many insecurities, but with a friend by your side, those will be all the more bearable. Maybe it is time for me to have a taste of the new and unknown. I will not forget from which I came, but instead will face new challenges with faith and a trustworthy companion by my side.
