Chapter 4

*When I woke up*

When I woke up there were 4 I.Vs stuck in my arms. I was in one of those terrible hospital gowns (the ones where your butt sticks out). Mason was in a sitting in a chair by the bed holding my pale hand as if it were glass; at least I know he kept his promise. I tried to sit up when Mason woke up in an instant trying to keep me laying down; I, of course, put up a fight. When I was completely exhausted (about 3 minutes) I stopped struggling and scooted over to let Mason sit beside me, wincing the entire time, "Don't tire yourself out!" Mason said groggily but firmly, I loved his morning voice. I could see he was wincing as well even though he wasn't the one in pain.

"I'm fine, come lay down, you look exhausted." I said patting the bed beside me.

"I'm exhausted because I've been waiting for you to get out of the coma you've been in." he said with a hint of pain, joy, and silliness behind the serious tone he was using. "But I've cherished every minute; you look really cute when you're asleep."

"You do too," I said, "So are we keeping our promise?"

"What promise?" he asked half-asleep beside me, "Don't answer that, I know what promise; yes." He paused, "Kalli I love you and I can't live a day of my life without you. When you were in a coma I couldn't stand it." Then why do I feel this shadow of doubt whenever you touch me?, I asked myself.

"I'll tell Uncle Levi to set up another bed in my room," I said. "But first can I get something to eat?"

"Yeah, the food here stinks so I'll go get McDonald's; I'm hungry too." he said but I knew he wasn't.

"Fine, but then you're taking a nap, I need one too, even though I've been in a coma for who knows how long." I said.

"Three days," Mason said in a pained voice. "A very small one though." Mason said.

"Ok, fine, now go get me something to eat!" I replied.

"Give me a kiss first." Mason said mischievously.

"Fine, but only because I'm starving,"

"Sure, that's why," he said as kissed me. He must have been really happy, I could tell because he seemed to kiss me with more of a passion. I felt no doubt this time and it was the first kiss I could really be happy about. Maybe he was just sorry for me, though. My leg! I thought. I broke away and asked Mason how it looked, "See for yourself," he said as he pulled back the covers.

I gasped, "It looks terrible! Can I swim?" I asked him.

"Hey, I'm going to go get lunch I'm really hungry," Mason replied. I guess I got my answer.

"Fine, could you bring Uncle Levi in?" I asked him trying to hide the malice that threatened to seep into my voice.

"Sure, sweetheart," he said caressing my face and smoothing my hair; I could see he detected my mood.

When he had left I again tried to sit up, but as I did Uncle Levi rushed in made me lie back down, exactly the way Mason had. "Boy am I glad I came in when I did!" he said with his signature smile, though I could see the same tired, hurt look in his eyes as I did in Mason's.

"Can you set up another bed in my room?" I asked him freeing us of the awkward silence that hung between us like a curtain.

"You want Mason to stay with us?" Uncle Levi asked. "Why? I mean, I know how much he means to you, and I know you are hurt, crippled, really-"

I interrupted him, "Thanks, that makes me feel sooooo much better," I said sarcastically. "But seriously, we made a promise and we're keeping it. He's very serious about it."

"Ok, just be careful. He's a player and I don't want you to get hurt," he said, I loved Uncle Levi like that, he was always worried about my safety.

"I know, he plans on us getting married young. He insists that we stay together for the rest of our lives, but he says that to every girl, right?"

Uncle Levi saw me tearing up and said, "Awwww, honey, he might but I've been watching him and I'm pretty sure you're not just one of those girls, he REALLY loves you and I'm pretty sure he won't leave you."

"I know but I want him to love me because HE loves me, not just because I love him." I said and Uncle Levi left saying goodbye and that I needed to rest.

I got relaxed, looking up at the beige ceiling and started to drift off when I felt Mason climb into the bed beside me. I felt his arms around my waist and put my head on his chest. We laid there for a while and he whispered, "Do you want some lunch?"

"No, I feel fine, plus I'm drained," I said and let out a contented sigh.

"Ok, honey, just remember I won't leave you unless I'm getting a Dr. Pepper." That always was his first love.

"Ok, I love you," I said sleepily.

"I love you too," Mason said as I left consciousness.
