When we got to Mason's house we were both greeted by a warm hug. Mason's mom hugged me and I nearly choked on her expensive perfume.

"Eliza set the table!" She trilled. Eliza is the 21-year-old maid, and I liked her better than Mason's parents, by a lot. Fortunately that's ok because he likes her better, too.

"We've got a present for you!" Mason exclaimed, I grinned. He whistled and Rolf came scampering in and started dancing around in circles.

"A dog!" Mrs. Davenport tried to hide her disgust.

"Mason, I thought we told you that you couldn't have a dog." Mr. Davenport harshly whisper-shouted to Mason.

"It's not my dog, I bought Rolf for Kalli." He beamed, I blushed.

"We'll talk about this later, just put that CREATURE in the laundry room!" Mr. Davenport choked out. It wasn't a real shame that Rolf had to go to the laundry room, it was as big as half of my house!

Dinner was enjoyable, for Mason and I. Eliza had cooked all of our favorite foods. When Eliza served the garlic mashed potatoes she slipped me a note.

Mason, who was across the table, looked like he got one too. I sign 1, 2, 3 and we both open our notes. Mine was in Eliza's handwriting, it read:

'Don't let him get to you, he wants the best for you and just can't seem to say no. He is used to family he has. You have always been the first thing on his mind, since the day he saw the mermaid that turned out to be you. Just remember that he might act like a jerk when he's with his friends, but he's got a heart of gold and never meant to/means to hurt you in any way. He came to me a few nights after the accident saying, "They shouldn't be pressuring her into this, she just had a traumatic experience and they just want her to act like it never happened and get on with our lives. I can't get over it and I KNOW she'll NEVER get over it."'

I was on the verge of tears. I looked over at Mason, saw the hard set of his jaw, and immediately knew he was thinking. He stole a glance at me and I saw pain marring his handsome features, I read on:

'He would gladly take that shark for you, you bring out the best in him.'

I had to excuse myself, using the excuse that I had to go to the bathroom. I made my way to his room, my sight blurred by a torrent of tears. I knew the way, even though I had only been in there once or twice, it was like the room was calling me. I collapsed onto his bed, took in his manly scent, and cried my eyes out.

He found me there, collapsed in tears in one of his old t-shirts. "What's wrong? Do you know you've been gone for hours? Gosh, you scared me."

"No, but Eliza gave me a note, I never knew you really loved me, I thought I was just another one of those girls who you thought you loved, but never did."

Pain flashed across his face, "I only dated those girls because I was looking for someone perfect, just like you, I don't know what took me so long to realize you were the one I was looking for." He got down on one knee, "Kalli, I've tried juggling many girl's hearts, but your's is independent and leads me somewhere new everyday. You are my one and only girl and my true love, will you marry me?"

I had fresh tears now, "Mason, I don't know what to say, I want to say yes but we're both really young. I love you."

"Then say yes!"

"Did you talk with Uncle Levi?"

"Of course, Kalli. I'll give you time to think, baby, I just wanted to know. You see, that ring is a promise ring, you're mine."

"I always will be." We kissed... a lot. "I think I'm just tired."

"Me too, let's go to bed." I scooted over and patted the bed next to me. "That shirt looks awesome on you." He sat down next to me and I laid my head in his lap, he stroked my hair.

I was in a daze when Mason lifted my head and climbed under the covers with me. He found my hand and gently lifted my head onto his rock-hard chest. He didn't know I was awake so he sang "Stealing Cinderella" by Chuck Wicks to me. His voice was strong and steady, yet soft, all at the same time.

When he had finished I said, "Mason, you never told me you could sing!"

"I thought you were asleep." He said flatly.

"I was. You should be on American Idol!"

"Kalli!" He said, sharply. I was digging into something he didn't want to tell me. What was it? He hurt me, he just proposed who-knows-how long ago and he already has secrets he won't tell me, unbelievable!

I turned my back to him so he wouldn't see the tears.

"Baby, I didn't mean it like that."

"What happened?" I said, my back still turned to him. He sighed.

"You know Sophie?" Sophie was his ex. "Well she said the same thing and I started playing gigs. The closer to you I got the harder the heartbreak, I found her cheating and gave up music because it reminded me of her.

"Well I'll never leave you and I love your music, so build a bridge and get over it."

"Have I mentioned that I love it when you get feisty? I'll sing for you as long as you want me to."

"Then you better be prepared because you shall now sing for the rest of your life."

"Not a problem, you're my only future anyway."

"Good." I put my head on his chest and realized we were both fully clothed. "What time is it?"

"12:30." He could see I was uncomfortable. "Something wrong?"

"I kinda want to put on pajamas."

"Oh, ok. Closet, 3rd shelf. Mom wanted a girl and stocked up on stuff for you when I fell in love with you. I won't look."

"You better not." I walked into his closet, picked out a silk nightgown with embroidered flowers, and promptly put it on.

I tapped Mason's shoulder and climbed into bed beside him. He woke up, groggily pulled his shirt off, and threw it off the bed. I heard a soft plop on his chest.

"What's that?"

His face twisted. "See for yourself." A shark tooth necklace hung around his neck. I let out a gasp. "That was how I thought you would react." He let out a laugh that almost sounded like a cough.

"Where did you get this?"

"They found it..." He swallowed, "There." He shook his head toward my leg.

"And you kept it?" I was incabable to know what he was thinking. Why would he keep something like that?

"It holds a promise, two actually."

"What are they?" I asked coldly.

"I'll always protect you and I'll kill that shark." It seemed that my accidemt affected him more than it did me.

"We'll find it. Calm down, baby. I put my head on his chest and instantly felt his heart racing. My stomach exploded in foreworks amd Mason put his strong arms around my shoulders. I was asleep in an instant.
