"Are we there yet? We've been walking for hours!" Asha complained. "It was your choice to follow the wolf." Quince replied. It was almost night time and the sun was setting, illuminating the forest in a golden glow. The orange and yellow leaves crunched under Asha and Quince's shoes, signaling that fall was about to begin.
"It may have been her choice, but in all due respect, she didn't know she would be following a wolf until sunset. Or that you would come with her." A humorous voice chimed in from in front of them. Asha looked around curiously. "Um, Quince, did you hear that?" Asha said looking around.
"Yes, I heard it." Quince answered, also looking around.
"Honestly Asha. Look in front of you. Your speaker is right there." The voice said again. Asha looked around and only found the wolf and Quince. "It couldn't have been Quince or me..so..was it the wolf?" she thought.
"Was it you?" Asha asked.
"Was it me what?' Quince inquired. Asha shook her head, pointing to the wolf. "No, not you, it."
"It? I am not an it. I am a she." The voice was back again. "I'm sorry. But um, who are you?" Asha asked. The wolf turned around, it's silvery tail flashing in the now glittering moonlight.
"My name is Isaza." The wolf said. "And I'm here to take you to my wolf pack."
Asha stared at the wolf, barely comprehending what it had just done. "Talking wolf...wolves talk. Quince, I'm not going crazy, right?" Quince nodded, as stunned as Asha. "Yeah. You're not crazy." Quince stopped for a moment and leaned on a oak tree. "Oh. My world is turning upside down."Asha was more focused on what the wolf had said after that. "Wait, wolf pack?" She asked. Isaza grinned, well, as much as a grin a wolf could do. "Yes, Asha. Wolf pack. We're not all dead you know." Isaza lifted her head up lofilty and trotted on ahead, leaves crunching under her paws.
Asha however, stayed back behind for Quince.
"Hey, you okay?" She asked her sister. Quince shrugged. "Well, I'm doing fine as I can be after talking to a talking wolf." The two sisters walked behind Isaza, shivering. "I forgot to bring a jacket." Asha stammering, shivering. "So, did I." Quince agreed, also shivering. "Do you have a flashlight? I can't see Isaza." Asha laughed. "Well, I'm not the one with a phone. Remember? I spent all my phone money on a 1948 Polaroid. But you have a phone, don't you?" Quince laughed, but the sound was quickly cut off with a low and ominous growl. Both girls froze, Asha holding onto Quince, and Quince with her left hand in her pocket reaching for her phone. "Isaza?" Asha called out. There was no answer. "Isaza?" Asha called out again. Again, no answer.
"Quince, take out your phone." Asha whispered to her sister. Quince obliged and shined the light around the forest floor. The forest was silent as a cobweb fluttering in the wind. There was no trace of Isaza in the silent forest. Then the wolf in question, Isaza, trotted back from behind a bush."Sorry, I didn't answer. I had to take care of something real quickly." She said. There was a splotch of blood on her coat and her muzzle was dotted with red marks. Isaza's once beautiful white coat was now light gray and covered with dirt. Asha nodded slowly, not believing her. But she walked along Isaza, Quince following behind. "So, how many wolves are in the wolf pack?" Asha asked. Isaza was silent for a moment, thinking.
"About, 20 or 30 wolves. I don't remember if Dawn had her puppies yet." Asha nodded slowly, not believing her ears. Dad hasn't killed all of them! Thank gods! Asha thought. The sky was turning light blue from dawn light and birds had started to chirp in the trees around them. "We've been walking all night?" Asha exclaimed surprised. "That doesn't seem possible!" Quince added, yawning. Isaza nodded, tired too. "Yeah. But we're here. Welcome to Pack Cazador." She grinned a wolf-like grin and walked away from Asha and Quince. "Hunter in Spanish." Asha noted, following Isaza. "So, their pack name is Pack Hunter." Quince remarked.
The two girls looked around the bright sunlit clearing at all the wolves around them. Wow. They aren't all dead. There were white wolves; though not as white as Isaza, their were coal black wolves and smoky gray wolves, there were wolves with red fur that glinted in the sunlight. The wolves looked around and bared their teeth as they saw Asha and Quince. A mother wolf looked up, stared at Asha and Quince fearfully and herded her pups back inside the den.
There was one wolf that seemed to want to attack the two. He, Asha thought it was a he, had his tail up and ears back. The wolf was clearly scared or nervous. Isaza noticed this and trotted over to the wolf. She spoke a few words to him and his ears relaxed but he still looked fearful.
"What's your status in the wolf pack?" Asha asked. "Are you the alpha?"
Isaza laughed and shook her head. "Ah, no. I'm a Beta. One of the two in this pack."
Isaza explained.
Both girls nodded and followed Isaza as she lead them into the Alpha's den explaining what to do when they meet her.Hope you liked it! Go and read my other stories, Instagram: the Lunar Chronicles and The Files of Quentin Flosser.
