That night Meggie found a nest away from everyone else. People came to see her but she sent them away.
"Mo," Meggie mumbled to herself everytime she found herself staring at one of the boys. "Focus on Mo."
But she couldn't. Her mind kept wandering to Doria, the look on his face when she told him. She kept picturing Farid, the envy and disbelief that Meggie had caused. She couldn't get her mind off them, no matter how hard she thought about Mo, no matter how far away she was. They were the only things on her mind.
"Mo," Meggie muttered again. "Focus on Mo."
She knew saying that wouldn't do anything, her heart always led her back to Doria and Farid. If she couldn't choose, she would have to force herself to focus on Mo. Meggie stretched out of her sitting position and swiftly made her way to Fenoglio's nest without even glancing at one of the boys. Meggie smiled. So she could do it. She just needed self control, she just needed to remind herself what matters right now. She stepped into Fenoglio's nest and without thinking plunked herself down next to Fenoglio's typewriter. She glanced at the typewriter and nearly fell off the nest. Fenoglio was gone. Meggie frantically searched around the nest. He wasn't there. She peered over the side of the nest. Fenoglio was nowhere to be seen.
"Meggie?" a voice behind her called.
Meggie whipped around. It was Doria. Meggie clamped her eyes shut and turned around.
"Focus on Mo," she whispered to herself. "Focus on Mo."
Something warm was gently placed on Meggie's shoulder.
"Meggie, are you alright?"
It was Doria. She recoiled from his touch but he grabbed her arm. Meggie tried again and again to pull herself out of his grasp but he stared at her sternly.
"Meggie, what's wrong?" he asked.
Meggie opened her mouth to speak but hesitated. They locked eyes and slowly she began to give in. Meggie collapsed in Doria's arms. Tears started streaming down her face. This was the first time she had cried about this. Doria stared down at Meggie, concerned, but he didn't say a word. He just held her tight in his arms and rested his chin gently on Meggie's head. He kissed the top of her head lightly and went back to resting his chin. She smiled up at him through the tears and hugged him tightly. Meggie would never let him go.
