You jerked at the restraints again. They were soft and allowed enough give for you to raise your hand a few inches above the mattress.
"Be still." The indifference in his voice vanished briefly as you heard his weight shift in the chair he'd been settled on, "You have quite a few injuries, some unfortunately associated with your rescue. CPR usually breaks a few ribs. Nothing life threatening."
You remained still trying to catch your panicked huffs. Right now you weren't in pain but you felt heavy and tired.
"You put up a decent fight once you came to, hence the cuffs. But if you're good I'll think about removing them." He stood, "What I want to know is what a devil fruit user was doing in the middle of uncharted seas with no boat in sight."
Uncharted? No boat?
Just how far had that bird creature taken you?
His boots scuffed the floor as he made his way to the side of the bed. Once your eyes landed on his unruly black locks and sharp steely eyes you knew exactly who had picked you up.
His torn wanted poster hung in Kid's workshop riddled with sharp objects.
The Surgeon of Death.
"Do you plan on answering me?" He scowled.
You nodded slowly raising your right fist and tapping it against the stiff mattress. It wasn't as effective as knocking on a hard surface but you hoped he'd figure it out. After a few more pats his tattooed fingers wound around your wrist gently forcing your hand to rest at your side.
"Are you mute?" His dark brows knit.
You shook your head lifting your hand again to mime holding a pen hoping he'd get you something to write with. Reaching into his coat pocket he removed a small spiraled notebook and pen. He placed the writing utensil in your hand and held the tiny notebook steady for you.
"Devil fruit is voice" You managed to sloppily scratch into the lined paper.
"Ah I see." he hummed lowering the pad again, "And your name?"
You obliged writing your name for him before losing your grip on the pen.
A clang against the door startled you.
"Captain, the next island is two days away. Would you like to stop and stock up?" The muffled voice called.
"Steady the course then." The captain replied turning his attention back to you, "Trafalgar Law."You nodded already very aware of who he was.
"You had a busted den den mushi in your pocket...are you a marine?"
You shook your head and pointed at him.
"I see. Who is your captain?" He asked moving the pad back to your hand as you gripped the pen.
Taking a deep breath and swallowing you began to slowly write "Eustass"
You didn't need to finish his name before Law groaned taking the notebook away. This probably wasn't good. You knew your captain hated him so the feeling was most likely mutual. You quickly went from victim to enemy.
He calmly tossed the booklet on the desk pressed against the opposite wall before turning to you.
"If I remove these will you behave?" He eyed your warily.
You nodded as he unbuckled the straps around your wrists first. Once completely free you winced wiggling up into a more seat position. Aside from broken ribs and the dryness in your throat you noticed your left leg was wrapped in a bandage and your clothes had been replaced with a plain white dressing gown of sorts.
"You've been through a lot." He stated earning an inquisitive glance from you.
You knew he wasn't referring to your near drowning that would have been obvious.
"The tattoo on your upper thigh." He pointed to your left leg, "That's a brand of slavers is it not?"
You swallowed what little bit of saliva you had tugging the gown down further though it was already covering your mark and nodded.
He smirked shaking his head slightly as he tossed a thin blanket in your lap, "I'm not sure why you would join that crew after surviving the slave trade."
You huffed.
"We'll drop you at the next island." He exited the room.
